Storm tennis opens spring campaign

ELSAH, Ill. - The Simpson College men's tennis team opened its spring season with a pair of dual matches, but fell to Principia and Illinois Wesleyan.

The Storm (0-3) first took on the host of the tri-match, Principia. The Panthers (4-0) took all three doubles points, despite a solid performance from freshman Javier Robles Solis.

Robles Solis, making his collegiate debut for the team, then won his singles match at the No. 2 spot. After dropping the first set 6-4, Robles Solis roared back, blanking his opponent 6-0 in the second set to set up a super-tiebreaker. Robles Solis won that by a score of 10-6 to claim the Storm's first point of the day.

The Storm began their next match against Illinois Wesleyan. At No. 3 doubles, the duo of Ethan Humble and Drake Downard narrowly missed out on victory. The team forced a tiebreak, but fell in a heartbreaker, with the final match score 8-7 (8-6). Grant Love took the first set of his match at No. 5 singles, but his opponent rallied back for a second set win, eventually winning the super-tiebreak 11-9.

Up Next

The Storm return to action in another double dual match, taking on host Cornell College at 9 a.m., before facing Wisconsin-Stevens Point afterwards.
