HOUSTON, Texas – The Eureka softball fell against St. Thomas in a season-opening doubleheader on Sunday.

The Celts, whose season began in early February and have 15 games under their belt, topped the Red Devils 8-1 in Game 1 and earned a 9-0 shutout in five innings in Game 2.

Game 1: St. Thomas 8, Eureka 1

Eureka recorded its only run of the game with an RBI single to first base by Gada Bryant (Westville, Ill./Westville/Lincoln) that scored Farrah Michaels (Mansfield, Ill./Blue Ridge) in the third inning. Michaels previously pinch-ran for Tatum Trotter (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood), who led off with a single. She advanced to second on a groundout and moved to third on a double by Macey Whisker (Washington, Ill./Washington/Illinois Central College).

Michaels' run tied the game at 1-1, but the Celts came back and took the lead with a run on two hits in the bottom half and pulled away with a five-run fourth inning. The home team tacked on a final run in the sixth.

The Red Devils notched five hits in the first game of the 2023 season, with Klaire Morris (Laurel, Mont./ Billings Skyview/Williston State) and Delaney Douglas (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) each contributing a base hit to go with Bryant and Trotter's singles and Whisker's double in the third.

St. Thomas pitcher Bailey Tisdale struck out five batters and only allowed one earned run in seven innings in the circle.

Game 2: St. Thomas 9, Eureka 0 (5 inn.)

The Red Devils couldn't get the bats going in Game 2 of the day.

St. Thomas' Allison Hughes held Eureka scoreless, notched eight strikeouts and only gave up one hit in five innings.

Whisker led off the game with a single to right field for Eureka, but she got caught stealing at second. Bria Wessel (Peoria, Ill./Limestone/) got hit by a pitch in the fourth, but was left stranded.

The Celts, meanwhile, plated four runs in the first, two runs in the second, two runs in the third and one run in the fourth.
