Men's soccer heads into postseason play with 2-0 shutout over Spalding

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The men's soccer team played their final match before the SLIAC tournament and captured a 2-0 shutout win over Spalding. The Panther goal scorers included Andres Garcia and Jaime Torres.

The Panthers put themselves on the scoreboard in the 20th minute when Garcia deposited a penalty kick in the net for 1-0 lead, and the one-goal advantage stayed through halftime.

In the 71st minute of the match, Torres added an insurance policy goal with an assist from Gabriel Sule.

The Panthers managed to maintain a clean sheet in the match, collecting four saves from Hiram Cruz whose goals against average dropped to 1.11 with his fourth shutout. He has performed even better in conference play with a GAA of 1.02.

GU outshot Spalding by an 11-7 margin, gaining a team-high three shots from Jared McPeek and Torres.

The Panthers (9-3-5, 9-1-3 SLIAC) will play in the SLIAC semifinals on Thursday in Greenville at 5 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
