Softball opens 2023 with two wins

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday at Plummer Family Park to give new head coach Ivan Estevez a great start to his coaching tenure at Greenville. The Panthers defeated Hanover 3-1 in game one before defeating Monmouth 12-0 in a shortened game two.

Greenville fell behind in the top of the third inning against Hanover when Alison Klaus permitted an unearned run.

However, GU responded with three in the bottom of the inning, scoring on groundouts by Jamey Johnson and Mia Boyd and an infield single from Jaclyn Belzer.

Madi Case, Boyd, and Desirae Yost all had two hits for Greenville.

Alison Klaus pitched all seven innings and struck out nine while only permitting three hits and four walks.

In game two, Greenville scored seven runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-0 win over Monmouth.

Greenville added four more runs in the top of the third and one in the fourth.

Boyd blasted a three-run home run for the Panthers in the first inning, and Andrea Roberts hit a three-run triple.

Emma Funk had a perfect game two at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort.

Case, Boyd, Yost, and Belzer each scored two runs.

The Panthers were led in the circle by Melissa Bernal who pitched three scoreless innings and earned her first win.

She was relieved by Sarah Salas who pitched two shutout innings.

The Panthers (2-0) will next play against Rose-Hulman on March 11 in Greenville.
