Softball wins one of two at Webster

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The softball team traveled to Webster for a doubleheader on Saturday and returned with a split in the two games. GU pounded Webster 16-4 in game one before falling 7-6 when Webster rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh of game two.

Game 1

Greenville totaled 21 hits and was led by Mia Boyd with a 5-for-5 hitting line as the Panthers dominated game one.

GU scored one in the first inning before Webster took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning, but Greenville quickly tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second.

The Panthers scored a run in the fourth to go ahead 3-2 before tallying six runs in the fifth for a 9-2 lead.

Webster made the score 9-4 in the bottom of the fifth, but Greenville pushed across seven runs in the six and seventh innings to win by 12.

Madi Case had a 4-for-5 outing for GU with two runs and four RBI, and Desirae Yost went 3-for-4 with two home runs, four runs scored, and three RBI.

Sarah Salas posted a 3-for-5 afternoon with a run scored and an RBI.

Pitcher Alison Klaus helped herself at the plate with two hits, and Emma Funk also had two hits.

Klaus pitched six innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on 10 hits. Melissa Bernal went to the circle for the final inning and held the Gorloks without a run.

Game 2

The Panthers and Gorloks ended Saturday's matchup with a second game that saw Greenville take the lead twice only to be overcome on both occasions.

After Greenville took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh, Webster scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first inning, and Webster went ahead 4-1 in the bottom of the third.

GU tied the game with two runs in the fourth and a solo home run from Mia Boyd in the fifth inning.

Webster pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth, but they were unable to hold the lead when the Panthers scored twice in the top of the seventh.

Mia Boyd's second game tying home run of the game made the score 6-6, and GU scored later in the inning with an RBI groundout from Melissa Bernal.

Boyd finished game two with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs and two RBI.

Salas and Funk each recorded two hits.

Andrea Roberts started in the circle and pitched into the sixth inning when Bernal relieved her. Roberts gave up five runs on nine hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Bernal allowed two unearned runs on three hits in the seventh inning.

The Panthers (10-9, 2-1 SLIAC) go to Illinois College for a doubleheader on Monday.
