Softball tops Lawrence in pair of mercy-rule decisions

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The softball team defeated Lawrence in two "short game" wins, 12-1 and 9-1, on Saturday at Panther Field.

Game 1

The Panthers were led by Emma Deters who had a three-run home run and a two-run single in Saturday's 12-1 game one win against Lawrence who was coached by former Panther head coach Tracy Cromer.

The Vikings took the lead in the game with a solo home run in the top of the first, and it took Greenville three innings to break through with offense.

When the Panthers offense started, it was hard to contain. Greenville scored seven runs in the bottom of the third and five in the bottom of the fourth.

Deters finished 2-for-3 with one run and five RBI.

Mia Boyd went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Andrea Roberts and Desirae Yost posted identical 1-for-2 lines with two runs and two RBI, and Madi Case was 2-for-4 with one run.

Jaclyn Belzer was 2-for-3 with two runs.

Alison Klaus pitched all five innings and settled down after the home run in the first inning to limit Lawrence to six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Game 2

The Panthers scored two runs in the second, four in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth in taking a 9-1 win in game two.

The Vikings broke through with a run in the fifth inning, but Boyd who entered to pitch the fifth inning held Lawrence to only one run.

Roberts started in the circle and limited Lawrence to three hits while fanning four batters.

Boyd, Belzer, Yost, Taylor Weiss, and Sarah Salas all finished with two hits for the Panthers. Belzer and Yost each scored twice, and Yost, Weiss, and Salas posted two RBI.

Next Up

The Panthers (8-6) will host Westminster in the start of SLIAC play in a single game on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
