SLIAC Baseball Players Earn All-Region Honors

A total of 13 baseball players from the SLIAC earned All-Region honors for the 2023 season. The ABCA/Rawlings Region 8 team featured 12 players from the SLIAC while 9 total players earned All-Region honors from D3baseball.com. Eight players earned recognition from both organizations with Parker Wielt being named the D3baseball.com Region 8 Player of the Year. 

Fontbonne University had three players earn recognition: Matt Helm and Colby Shivers appeared on both All-Region lists while Gavin Kinworthy appeared on one list. Helm was named first-team DH from the ABCA and second-team DH by D3baseball.com. The senior finished with a .434 batting average, 7 home runs, and 48 RBI. He led the team with 69 hits, including 18 doubles, and had a .679 slugging percentage. Shivers, a junior second baseman, was named second-team by the ABCA and third-team by D3baseball.com. He recorded a .379 average with 4 home runs and 37 RBI; adding 42 runs scored. Kinworthy, a sophomore pitcher, was named third-team by D3baseball.com after going 8-4 this year with a 3.18 earned-run average and 96 strikeouts. 

 

Greenville University's Landon Mokris picked up second-team honors from the ABCA. The senior infielder led the SLIAC in both batting average (.455) and RBI (64) while finishing with 10 home runs and a .793 slugging percentage. 

Four players from Spalding Univeristy earned All-Region honors with all four earning recognition from both organizations. Hunter Stong was a second-team selection on both lists. The catcher hit .376 with 8 home runs and 51 runs batted in. He finished with 17 doubles and 41 runs scored. Caleb Collins, a pitcher, also picked up second-team honors from both organizations. The senior was 6-5 on the year, leading the league with 89.2 innings pitched, recording a 2.31 E.R.A. with 88 strikeouts. Michael Newsom, an infielder, was a second-team pick from ABCA and a third-team selection by D3baseball.com. He finished with a .379 average, driving in 39, and led the league with 64 runs scored and 29 stolen bases. Jacob Spanyer earned third-team honors on both lists. The junior outfielder hit .374 with 7 home runs and 49 RBI, scoring 42 times. 

Webster University had five different players receive recognition. Parker Wielt and Ben Kowalski appeared on both lists while Evan Evola and Charlie Burton were honored by the ABCA and Ben Swords appeared on the D3baseball.com list. Wielt was a first-team pick from D3baseball.com and second-team from the ABCA. He hit .392 with 9 home runs and 50 RBI, scoring 50 times and finishing with 14 doubles and 3 triples. Kowalski, a pitcher, was second-team ABCA and third-team D3baseball.com. He went 6-3 with two saves, recording 70 strikeouts in 78 innings pitched. Evola, an outfielder, picked up first-team honors from the ABCA after hitting .346 with 12 home runs and 44 RBI. Burton, a catcher, was a third team selection after hitting .321 with 7 home runs and 33 RBI. Swords was a second-team pick after hitting .363 with 2 home runs and 40 RBI.
