SLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament Preview

 

SLIAC Tournament At A Glance  - 2022 SLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament Page    

The 2022 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament will be held this week with three separate play dates, concluding with the championship game on Saturday. The top six teams from the regular season will compete in the postseason with the top two teams (Webster University and Greenville University) receiving byes. The SLIAC Quarterfinals will be held on Tuesday, November 1 with #3 Principia College facing #6 Eureka College and #4 Fontbonne University hosting #5 Westminster College. The winners will then face #1 Webster and #2 Greenville on Thursday in the semifinals. The SLIAC Championship will be held on Saturday, November 5. The higher seed will host each game in the tournament.

Admission for all tournament games will be $5 for adults, $3 for 16 and under. Please check each host school's attendance policy for any restrictions. Both semifinal games as well as the championship game with be broadcast live with College Casts.

A Look at the Gorloks

Webster won its third consecutive regular-season title after going 11-1-2 this season. They led the league in scoring, with 40 goals, and average 17.3 shots per game. They bring a two-game winning streak into the tournament with their only SLIAC loss this year coming against Principia, 2-0 on October 22, snapping a 37-game win streak against conference opponents for the Gorloks. Aamahn Murvin, the two-time reigning SLIAC Offensive Player of the Year, has been a force once again this fall; leading the league with 13 goals and 32 points. The Gorloks have options behind him with six other players recording double-digit goals including Mark Moore and Amar Mujezinovic who each have five. Defensively the Gorloks have a pairing of Nick Thomas and Tavis Cameron. Ty Baudendistel has taken over in the net as a freshman, playing over 900 minutes and recording 32 saves with a G.A.A. of 0.64.

A Look at the Panthers

Greenville had their highest finish in the standings since 2015, coming in second place. Greenville carries a conference-best five-game winning streak into the tournament. The Panthers will be the #2 seed and totaled 35 goals this season on 17.1 shots per game. Jared McPeek is the team's top offensive threat with 9 goals this year and 53 in his career. Pablo Valverde has netted 6 goals with 4 assists this season while Napoleon Urquidi leads the team with 6 assists to go with his three goals. Greenville likes to push the attack, often leaving defender Patricio Pichardo as the last stop on defense. Hiram Cruz holds a 1.11 goals-against average in nearly 1300 minutes played, recording 45 saves.

A Look at the Panthers

Principia had their best finish in the standings since 2019, going 6-4-4. They closed out the regular season with back-to-back draws and are unbeaten in their last five games. The Panthers averaged 14.3 shots per game this year and rank 5th in the conference with 25 goals. Coach Semnacher has a balanced team with 14 players tallying at least one point this year including 13 with goals. Their leading scorer is Victor Dos Santos Reis with 5 goals. E.G. Pierce is an experienced defender and anchors the backline while Torben Rehnert has put together an impressive first year with the Panthers, holding a 0.81 goals-against average with 93 saves and a .886 save percentage.

A Look at the Red Devils

For the first time in program history, the Red Devils will be playing in the SLIAC tournament. Eureka earned its first postseason bid by playing to a draw in the regular season finale. First-year head coach Ryan Woodside not only led the Red Devils to their first win since 2019 but its most SLIAC wins in a season (3). Eureka was 3rd in the league with 30 goals, leading the league with a .516 shot-on-goal percentage. Khalil Alleyne (9 goals, 2 assists) and Isaac Noriega (5 goals, 6 assists) form the team's top offensive threats. Freshman Brayton Strawkas has played almost every minute this season in net and has stopped 102 shots.

A Look at the Griffins

Fontbonne enters the game 1-3-3 in their last seven games, most recently picking up a 1-1 tie in the regular season finale against their quarterfinals opponent. The Griffins netted 30 goals this season and average 11.4 shots per game. Three different Griffins have reached double figures in scoring this fall. Brandon O'Dell and Carter Youmans each have 5 goals and 3 assists while Joe Noah is just behind with 5 goals and 2 assists. Ian Steinkamp leads the team with 4 assists. Dominic Haggard has stopped 71 shots in his 1600 minutes of action and holds a 1.83 goals-against average.

A Look at the Blue Jays

Westminster earned draws in their last three regular season games, meaning their last win was back on October 11 against Principia. The Blue Jays ranked last in the conference with 13 goals this season and average just 9.6 shots per game. Offensively the Blue Jays look to sophomore Adam Luetkemeyer who has 4 goals and 3 assists. Niklas Olsson and Travis Bieg also have netted multiple goals this season. Toby Hughes has played the majority of time in net for the Blue Jays, stopping 59 shots in over 1000 minutes.
