Bernal Throws No-Hitter for Panthers

In-game one of a doubleheader against Blackburn College, Greenville University pitcher Melissa Bernal tossed a no-hitter. The freshman hurler went all five innings in a 13-0 win over the Beavers, allowing no hits while walking four and striking out two.

Bernal walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 1st inning but followed with a strikeout and a pair of fly balls. She retired the first two batters of the 2nd inning before walking another batter and then escaped the inning by forcing a pop up to short. Another walk started the 3rd inning but Bernal induced back-to-back groundouts before ending the inning on a fly ball to centerfield. A ground out started the 4th but Bernal issued another walk. She then promptly struck out the next batter and ended the inning on a pop-up to second. The 5th inning saw Bernal start with a ground out before the next batter reached on an error but was quickly erased. Bernal completed the no-hitter with another infield pop-up for the final out of the game.

Greenville scored in every inning except the 3rd including putting up nine runs combined in the final two frames. Emma Funk led all players with three hits while Morgan Wendling, Desirae Yost, Mia Boyd, Jaclyn Belzer, and Taylor Weiss all had multiple runs batted in.
