2021 SLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament Preview

 

SLIAC Tournament At A Glance  - 2021 SLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament Page    

The 2021 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament will feature the new six-team tournament format with the top two seeds receiving first-round byes. The SLIAC Quarterfinals will be held on Tuesday, November 2 with #3 Greenville hosting #6 Principia and #4 Spalding going up against #5 Westminster. The winners will then face #1 seed Fontbonne and #2 Webster on Thursday in the semifinals. The SLIAC Championship will be held on Saturday, November 6. The higher seed will host each game in the tournament.

Admission for all tournament games will be $5 for adults, $3 for 16 and under. Please check each host school's attendance policy for any restrictions. A reminder that both semifinals games as well as the championship game with be broadcast live with College Casts.

A Look at the Griffins

The Griffins completed a second consecutive undefeated conference season, the first time the program has accomplished that feat. They pepper opponents, keepers, averaging 26.4 shots per game, and finished 2nd in the league with 55 goals this fall. The quick-strike attack features a three-headed monster of Molly Kovarik, Krystal Kohenskey, and Caroline Neal. Kovarik led the SLIAC with 19 goals while dealing a league-leading 10 assists, to go with her 7 goals. Neal meanwhile tallied 10 goals and 3 assists. Claire Dalton and Rylee Stafford anchor the defense, a defense that allowed just 83 shots all season long. When the opponents do get off a shot the Griffins have Mary Beers in the net. Beers made 34 saves and is the program's all-time shutout leader with 22.

A Look at the Gorloks

Webster got off to an unusually slow start, going 1-2 to begin conference play. However, the Gorloks grew as a team, going undefeated in its final 11 games including closing out the regular season with 6 straight wins; the longest active win streak in the league. Webster averaged 23.2 shots per game and scored a conference-high 64 goals this fall while recording a conference-best 12 shutouts. Jordan Lande is the team's top threat, with 18 goals and 5 assists. Mackenzie Sundhausen is second on the team with 9 goals while Jennifer Munger has a team-high 10 assists; tying her for the conference lead. Reaghan Young is the team's defensive leader while Taryn Banfield controls the net. Banfield has 55 saves and a .846 save percentage this season.

Panthers by the Numbers

A Look at the Panthers

Greenville dropped its last two regular-season games, coming to the top two seeds in the tournament. They netted 44 goals this season with Jen De Leon De Leon leading the way with 9 goals, adding 4 assists. Kiera Coleman is second on the team with 7 goals and 4 assists while Emma Cadwell, with 4 goals, leads the team with 7 assists. Freshman Taylor Howard dished out 6 assists as well from her defense position and along with Maddie Missey holds down the backline. In net, the Panthers have Grace Gehner, who tallied 60 saves and a 1.23 goals-against average in 15 starts this fall.

A Look at the Panthers

After sitting out last year Principia went 4-11-1 overall this fall,  dropping its final three regular-season games. They scored 20 goals this season and averaged 10.6 shots per game. Georgia Rathers paced the offense with 6 goals and 4 assists. Viviane de Castro and Adriana Rucks each recorded 3 goals with de Castro picking up two game-winners. Leslie Barrera, a freshman, played all but 40-minutes in the net for the Panthers this fall, finishing 3rd in the conference with 110 saves.

A Look at the Golden Eagles

Spalding enters the tournament with three straight wins and buried 44 goals during the regular season. Baeli Young carries the offensive load for the team, notching 15 goals and 5 assists this fall. Bailey Whitehead, Kara Krueger, and Keely Ashby all picked up 5 goals as well. Andrea Hayden started all 18 games at defense for the team this season. Sophomore Jordan Schneider stopped 60 shots this season and carries a 1.49 goals-against average. 

   

Blue Jays by the Numbers

A Look at the Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have won two straight as they enter the postseason and ranked 5th in the league with 30 goals. Rachel Nolte led the team with 22 points on 8 goals and 6 assists. Lauren Halamicek added 5 goals and 4 assists from her midfield spot. Along the backline, Maddy Lawton and Abbey Montana are All-Conference defenders and both started 16 games this season. Megan Davidson was the only Blue Jay to wear a keeper jersey this season, totaling 78 saves with a 1.59 goals-against average.
