Kovarik Becomes Griffins Career Leader in Goals

History was made on Wednesday night with Molly Kovarik becoming the all-time scoring leader in Fontbonne women's soccer with her 49th career goal as the Griffins cruised to a 6-1 win over Spalding.

Game Breakdown

The Griffins provide the offensive pressure early on and it paid off in the 18th minute when Caitlyn Smith scored off a free kick from 35 yards out, her second on the year, giving Fontbonne a 1-0 lead.

Then, in the 24th minute, the Griffins made it a 2-0 game when Alyson Carroll's shot went off the post but Molly Kovarik was there to bury the rebound for her 13th goal on the year. It marked her 49th career goal putting her atop the Fontbonne record book, which was held by Kendra Schilli, who's in the Fontbonne Hall of Fame, with 48 goals spanning the 2008-11 seasons.

Prior to the half ending, the Griffins struck again when Krystal Kohenskey's corner kick found Alexandria Smith who headed it in for her second on the year giving Fontbonne a commanding 3-0 lead.

Fontbonne made it a quick 4-0 deficit for the Spalding Golden Eagles when Caroline Neal scored her ninth of the year off Kohenskey's cross into the box in the 48th minute.

In the 53rd minute, the Griffins made it 5-0 when Carroll was all alone behind the Golden Eagles defense and beat Jordan Schneider for her second on the year.

Spalding spoiled the shutout in the 54th minute with a goal, but Fontbonne tacked on another in the 68th minute from Kohenskey as they went on for the five-goal victory.

Fontbonne Leaders

  • The six goals against Spalding are its highest since Sept. 30th, 2011.
  • The Griffins ended with a 15-4 shot advantage.
  • Kovarik's up to 109 career points at Fontbonne placing her third all-time. She's four points shy of surpassing Jerri Nahlik (1995-99) for second.
  • Kohenskey's goal and two assist performance give her five goals and eight assists on the season.
  • Kohenskey's tied for sixth at Fontbonne with 18 career assists.
  • Mary Beers earned career win No. 30 at Fontbonne.
