Kovarik, Banfield Top All-Conference Honors
Cross-town rivals, Fontbonne University and Webster University have split the top conference awards for the 2021 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer season. Fontbonne takes home the Offensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year awards while Webster receives the Defensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards.
Kovarik picks up her second consecutive Offensive Player of the Year award after leading the league in goals with 17 and points with 36 in her 14 conference contests. She had 5 game-winning goals and finished the regular season with 19 goals and 3 assists for 41 points overall. Kovarik is the only Griffin in program history to have won the league's top offensive award. She is also the program's all-time leader in goals with 55.
Kovarik's coach, Dylan Cassidy, likewise wins his second straight conference award. Cassidy guided the Griffins to a 12-0-2 SLIAC record this season, going undefeated for a second straight year. The Griffins outscored their opponents 55-13 this season including 51-7 in conference play.
The coaches selected Taryn Banfield, from Webster, as the league's top defensive player. The keeper ranked 1st in the conference in goals-against average (0.44), goals against (6), save percentage (.870), and shutouts (9) this fall. She made 40 saves during her 13 conference games and played in over 1200-minutes. Overall, she carried a 0.56 goals-against average with 55 saves and 10 shutouts this season. She is the first Gorlok goalkeeper to win the award in program history.
The 2021 Newcomer of the Year is fellow Gorlok Mackenzie Sundhausen. The freshman midfielder put up 8 goals and 5 assists for 21 total points during her conference season; ranking her in the top five in both goals and assists. She had 9 goals and 5 assists overall this season and joins a long list of Gorloks to win the award, the first since 2018.
The final top conference award, Team Sportsmanship, goes to Principia College. This award goes to the program that best exemplifies sportsmanship values the conference strives for each season. The Panthers were tied for the fewest cards as a team this fall, with 6, and are coached by Meagan Fleming.
