Rivals to Meet in Championship Game

Rivals will meet in the championship game of the 2021 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament. #1 seed Fontbonne University moved on with a 4-0 win over #4 seed Spalding University while #2 seed Webster University advanced with a 2-0 win over #3 seed Greenville University. The championship game will take place on Saturday, November 6 at 4 p.m. at Gay Field in St. Louis, Mo.

#1 Fontbonne defeated #4 Spalding, 4-0 BOX SCORE
The league's most dangerous offense was kept at bay for the first 30-minutes but in the end, the Griffins attack could not be kept down. Leading scorer Molly Kovarik opened the scoring at the 32-minute mark, pushing the ball into the bottom left corner of the net after a pass from Krystal Kohenskey. Kovarik made it 2-0 Fontbonne just before halftime slipping the ball in off a cross from Kohenskey. It was Kovarik again at the 52-minute mark for her 3rd hat trick of the season, this time being set up by Kierstyn Weaver. The Griffins added a fourth goal when Libby Bateman headed the ball past the keeper on a cross once again from Kohenskey. Mary Beers was not very busy but stopped both shots she faced in picking up the shutout. Jordan Schneider made 10 saves in the losing effort.

#2 Webster defeated #3 Greenville, 2-0 BOX SCORE
An early goal just five minutes into the game was all that host Webster needed to get past Greenville. Mackenzie O'Neal scored off a pass from Jordan Lande, giving the Gorloks all the offense they would need. The Gorlok defense did the job the rest of the game, holding Greenville to just three shots in the game. Taryn Banfield stopped all three of those shots with Isabella Dickneite tacking on an insurance goal at the 76-minute mark on a pass from Jaqlyn Ferguson.

The Series
Webster leads the all-time series against Fontbonne 25-6-1 however the Griffins are undefeated against the Gorloks in the last four meetings, including going 1-0-1 this year. Fontbonne's win in 2019, which started the current streak for the Griffins, snapped a previous 10 game winning streak in the series by the Gorloks.

Championship History
Fontbonne is making its second straight trip to the championship game but is still in search of the program's first, and only, title since 1996. Webster has won a conference record 10 tournament titles with its last coming in 2019. This marks the third time the two rivals have met for a tournament title, following the 2016 and 2017 championship games.
