SLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament Preview

 

SLIAC Tournament At A Glance  - 2022 SLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament Page    

This year's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament starts this week, concluding on Saturday with the championship game. Fontbonne University and Webster University earned byes as the top two teams in the league this fall and will join four other schools in search of the 2022 title. The SLIAC Quarterfinals will be held on Tuesday, November 1 with #3 Greenville University facing #6 Principia College and #4 Westminster College hosting #5 Spalding University. The winners will then face #1 Fontbonne and #2 Webster on Thursday in the semifinals. The SLIAC Championship will be held on Saturday, November 5 at 1 p.m. The higher seed will host each game in the tournament.

Admission for all tournament games will be $5 for adults, $3 for 16 and under. Please check each host school's attendance policy for any restrictions. Both semifinal games as well as the championship game with be broadcast live with College Casts.

A Look at the Griffins

Fontbonne completed a third consecutive undefeated conference regular season this fall, recording a program record 14 SLIAC wins. The Griffins outscored opponents 58-7 this season, finishing second in the league in goals. They pepper opponent keepers with 22.8 shots per game and allowed just one goal against conference competition this season. Krystal Kohenskey stepped up to fill in the shoes of Molly Kovarik, who graduated last year after winning back-to-back SLIAC Offensive Player of the Year awards. Kohenskey leads the league with 15 goals and 16 assists, totaling 46 points. Allyson Carroll, Bianca Cortez-Perez, and Caroline Neal give Coach Cassidy options outside of Kohenskey. Midfielder Caitlyn Smith is the lynchpin that moves the ball from defense to offense and is second on the team with 7 assists. Mary Beers has a conference-low 0.44 goals-against average, making 33 saves.

A Look at the Gorloks

After dealing with injuries early in the season, going 4-5-1 in their first ten games, the Gorloks found their way and closed out the season by winning 9 of its final 10 games including their current six-game winning streak. The Gorloks boast a dangerous offensive combo of Grace Rodgers and Jordan Lande. The pair each have 13 goals this season with Rodgers also second in the league with 10 assists. Abbey Poe is another threat with her 8 goals while Mackenzie O'Neal and Mackenzie Sundhausen have each had big moments as well. Defender Reaghan Young not only is valuable on defense but has 2 goals and 6 assists this season on the attack. In net, it is Taryn Banfield with her 0.93 goals-against average and 49 saves.

A Look at the Panthers

Greenville is on a three-game winning streak coming into the tournament which snapped a previous three-game losing streak. The Panthers rank second in the league with 62 goals, getting off 19.3 shots per game. The Panthers have seven players with double-digit points this season including Ashlie Johnston Cabral and Jen De Leon De Leon who each have double-digit goals. Cabral leads the team with 12 goals while De Leon De Leon has 11 goals. Emma Cadwell has tallied 6 goals and leads the team with 10 assists. Addison Miller has made 18 starts this year and holds a 0.91 goals-against average with 42 saves.

A Look at the Panthers

Principia was able to close out the regular season on a strong note, topping Eureka 2-0 and snapping a three-game losing streak. Principia is under the guidance of first-year head coach Samuel Thomas and ranks 6th in the league with 24 goals. Viviane de Castro leads the team with 9 goals and 2 assists. Kannon Gill and Mirsa Boyer each have 4 goals and three more players have notched multiple goals this season. Renea Garza has played over 1200 minutes in net for the team and holds a 2.94 goals-against average with 74 saves.

A Look at the Blue Jays

Westminster had a three-game unbeaten streak stopped in its regular season finale, falling 1-0 to Fontbonne. The Blue Jays netted 42 goals this season, ranking 5th in the SLIAC. They average 18.5 shots per game. The Blue Jays are led by a pair of freshmen in Payton Montana and Hannah Shylanski. Montana has 8 goals and 3 assists while Shylanski has 7 goals and 1 assist. Abbey Montana is a longtime fixture on the backline for the Blue Jays and is joined by fellow senior Maddy Lawton. Megan Davidson remains the team keeper and carries a 0.70 goals-against average in 14 games this season with 79 saves.

A Look at the Golden Eagles

Spalding enters the postseason on a two-game losing streak. They rank 4th in the league with 43 goals and average 15.4 shots per game. Baeli Young is one of the premier strikers in the league and has 14 goals and 8 assists this season. Faith Rutherford has recorded 9 goals and 9 assists while Melaney Frick is also in double-digit points with 5 goals and 4 assists. Defender Dori Emig is the team's top defender. Time in net has been split evenly between Olivia Bosch and Jordan Schneider with each playing 765 minutes and each recording a 1.76 goals-against average.
