Upsets Reign in Women's Soccer Semis

The semifinals of the 2022 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was a night of upsets with both lower seeds taking down the top two seeds in the tournament to advance to the championship game.

Semifinals - #4 Westminster tied #1 Fontbonne, 1-1 (Advance 3-2 on PK) BOX SCORE
The visiting Westminster Blue Jays were able to crack through against the Fontbonne Griffin defense for the biggest goal of their season. The Griffins had allowed just one goal through 14 conference games and completed the league's first 14-0 SLIAC season since 2002. After a scoreless first half, which saw Fontbonne outshoot Westminster 9-3, the Griffins opened the scoring on a goal from Caitlyn Smith. Smith and Mia Patterson executed a give-and-go play with Smith racing down the side and burying her shot from out wide into the far upper corner of the net. The Blue Jays' attack was livelier in the second half, getting off seven shots. Hannah Shylanski cut into the box and centered the ball to an open Annalise Beck who found the netting for the tying goal. After 26 shots in the first 90 minutes, the two teams managed just five in the two overtime periods, sending the game to penalty kicks. Westminster connected on its first three attempts with Megan Davidson making the stop on the Griffins' fifth attempt to send the Blue Jays to the championship.

Semifinals - #3 Greenville defeated #2 Webster, 3-1 BOX SCORE
Webster struck early in the game with Mya Stegen putting a shot from distance in off the left post at the 6-minute mark. With the pace of play a fast one, the game was far from over. Greenville mustered the tying goal at the 33-minute mark when Jen De Leon De Leon headed the ball in off the post after a cross into the box from teammate Allyson Schulz. The Panthers needed just 50-seconds of the second half to take the lead. Again it was De Leon De Leon, this time hitting a high shot from the top of the box that glanced off the keepers' hands. The Panthers added an insurance goal less than two minutes later when Emma Cadwell drove a ball from five yards behind the half line, finding the head of Nina Torvisco off a bounce for the goal. Webster outshot Greenville 20-18 with Greenville's Addison Miller making 13 saves.
