Principia, Webster Dominate Player of the Week Selections for September 3-9

St. Louis, Mo. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the Athletes of the Week for the week of September 3-9.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Principia College's Wylie Mangelsdorf, a junior from Palmer, Alaska, has been named the Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of September 3-9.

Mangelsdorf ran a time of 25:46 on the 8K course at the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College. He finished fourth out of 207 runners competing and marked a personal best in his third time running the course in his career. Principia placed seventh out of 13 teams overall.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Principia College's Casey Powell, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo. (Cheyenne Mountain), has been named the Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of September 3-9.

Powell finished 10th out of 147 runners at the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College. She posted a time of 23:28 on the 6K course, marking a personal best by 19 seconds on the course. Principia placed eighth out of 11 teams competing.

MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Webster University's Clint Carder, a senior from DeSoto, Mo., has been named the Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 3-9.

Carder, a forward, scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory versus Rhodes College. He scored in the 55th minute off a throw-in from teammate Josh Papes. Webster went 1-1 for the week with the win over Rhodes and a 4-1 loss to Loras College.

MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Webster University's Brian Woodward, a sophomore from Eureka, Mo., has been named the Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 3-9.

Woodward, a goalkeeper, posted his second shutout in three games played this season as the Gorloks blanked Rhodes College, 2-0. He recorded three saves in the victory. Woodward also had 10 saves in a 4-1 loss to nationally ranked No. 3 Loras College.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Principia College's Rachel Publicover, a senior from Saratoga, Calif. (Westmont), has been named the Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 3-9.

Publicover, a forward, had three goals and two assists in two games played last week. She scored one goal and one assist in a double overtime draw against Millikin University. Publicover then scored both goals in a 2-1 victory against Loras College. Principia fell behind 1-0 in the first half, but Publicover scored shortly after off a cross from teammate Hayley MacWilliams. She then netted the game-winner in the 89th minute on a deflection off the goalkeeper.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Webster University's Jessica Davis, a sophomore from Belleville, Ill. (Belleville West), has been named the Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 3-9.

Davis, a goalkeeper, went 2-0 in goal last week with two shutouts. She posted three saves against Elmhurst College, who was ranked No. 6 in the Central Region. The Gorloks defeated Elmhurst, 1-0. Davis then had two saves in a 3-0 win over Monmouth College (Ill.), who had previously been undefeated.

VOLLEYBALL - OFFENSIVE
Principia College's Tess Rountree, a sophomore from Paso Robles, Calif., has been named the Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for the week of August 31-September 2.

Rountree, an outside hitter, recorded 65 kills, 50 digs, 13 blocks and five service aces in five matches played last week. She had 14 kills, 11 digs, one block and one ace in a 3-1 loss to NCAA Division II Maryville University (Mo.). Rountree added 14 kills, 16 digs, two aces and one block in a 3-0 victory versus Aurora University, and she had 13 kills, 10 digs, five blocks and a .444 attack percentage in a 3-1 win over Beloit College. Rountree best outing of the week was a 15 kills, six blocks (5 solo blocks), 10 digs and one service ace performance in a 3-1 loss to North Central College (Ill.). She also had nine kills, three digs and one service ace in a 3-0 loss to Roosevelt University.

VOLLEYBALL - DEFENSIVE
Fontbonne University's Olivia Thurmond, a senior from St. Louis, Mo. (Bishop DuBourg), has been named the Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 3-9.

Thurmond, a libero, averaged 7.67 digs per set and had six service aces in four matches played last week. She tallied 39 digs and five service aces in a 3-1 win versus Eureka College and added 37 digs and one service ace in a 3-1 victory versus Knox College. Thurmond also had 23 and 16 digs respectively in back-to-back losses to Lincoln Christian University (3-1) and Monmouth College (Ill.) (3-0).
