SAUGET, Ill. – The Eureka baseball team challenged No. 12 Webster in the first game of a road doubleheader on Saturday.
But the Gorloks held off the Red Devils in a 4-2 victory and blanked them in a 10-0 Game 2, taking the first two games of a three-game St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division series at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
Webster improved to 12-5 and 2-2 in the conference after getting swept at Spalding on Wednesday. Eureka fell to 4-7 and 0-2 in SLIAC play.
The Red Devils will conclude the series on Sunday at noon.
Game 1: Webster 4, Eureka 2
Senior Sean Green (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) gave Eureka an early lead when he delivered a leadoff home run to right-center field to start the game. However, Webster evened the score in the bottom half after an RBI double by Ben Swords. A Swords RBI single through the right side put Webster ahead 2-1 in the third, then another Swords RBI double in the fifth led to an RBI single by Kyler Kent that gave Webster a 4-1 advantage.
Swords went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two doubles and one run scored for the Gorloks.
The Red Devils scored two runs on six hits, but left the bases loaded in the second, stranded one in the fifth and two in the sixth.
The team's second run of the game came in the sixth inning on a Joe Quinn (Coal City, Ill./Coal City) solo homer down the right-field line.
Webster's Jake Anderson recorded the win after limiting EC to one run on two hits in three innings in relief of starter Brendan May. Quinn, who allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks, took the loss for the Red Devils.
Game 2: Webster 10, Eureka 0
In Game 2, the Gorloks' batters mashed 17 hits while winning pitcher Dakota Borman held the Red Devils to just three hits and two walks in five innings, and fanned seven.
The Red Devils regularly had opportunities to get on the board, but they left 10 men on base. Green had two of EC's three hits, while Jeremy Sinople (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) had the other one.
Four Gorloks had multi-hit games, with Nate Throll's three hits, four RBIs and a home run leading the way.
