Millikin Hands Eureka First Loss, 88-68
DECATUR, Ill. — After a 3-0 start, the Eureka women's basketball team conceded its first loss of the 2019-20 season on Sunday.
Millikin took down the Red Devils 88-68 at Griswold Stadium.
Millikin grabbed a 21-12 lead in the first quarter, and led by 10 after Jazmin Brown knocked down a 3-pointer pointer to end the first half, 39-29.
Eureka scored the first four points of the third quarter and cut the lead to 39-33 after a layup by Whitney Bozarth (Normal, Ill./Normal West), but Millikin responded with nine straight points to push the lead back up to 13, when Aubrey Magro buried a jumper beyond the arc with 5:43 remaining in the third.
Eureka only came within 10 one other time the rest of the way.
The Red Devils shot 35 percent (20-for-57) from the floor, and 4-for-13 from beyond the arch, finishing the game at 30.8 percent.
Leading the way for Eureka was freshman Jadyn Mitchell (Flanagan, Ill./Flanagan-Cornell), who notched a career-high 21 points while adding three boards off the bench.
Three other Red Devils had double-digit scoring efforts. Bozarth had 13, followed by Olivia Falls (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) with 12 and Marissa Murphy (Canton, Ill./Canton) with 11.
Both Ashley Harfst (Saunemin, Ill./Pontiac) and Falls had a share of the team-high rebounds with seven.
Eureka (3-1) will travel back home to take on Knox (2-2) inside the Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The Red Devils previously knocked off Prairie Fire off in overtime 83-76 earlier this season.
