Gorlok Men's Tennis Extends Winning Streak to 10

Webster University extended its win streak to 10 straight matches here Tuesday as the Gorloks picked up a 7-2 non-conference victory over Fontbonne University at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park.

With the win, Webster improved its record to 10-2 overall, while Fontbonne falls to 0-5 on the year. Tuesday's match was played as a non-conference match as the two teams will play its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on April 11 at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.

In Tuesday's match, the two teams opened the match by playing all six singles matches and then played doubles.

The Gorloks began the match by sweeping all six singles matches for just the second time this season as Webster also won all six singles matches last Tuesday at home against Westminster (Mo.) College. 

Along with winning all six singles, the Gorloks lost a total of 15 games in singles action, including junior Riley Muren(O'Fallon, Mo./Illinois-Springfield) losing eight of 20 games at the No. 1 spot against FBU's Sebastian Culton. Muren defeated Culton, 6-4, 6-3 to improve his singles record to 9-3 on the season.

The Gorloks began Tuesday's match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles by junior Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell). In addition to Andrade, senior Charlie McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) also won by 6-0, 6-0 scores at the No. 3 spot. Andrade won his fifth straight match and improved to 5-2, while McGhee won his third straight match and improved to 9-2 on the year.

Sophomore Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) won his eighth straight match in singles play as he defeated FBU's Zach Stevens, 6-0, 6-2 to improve to 9-2 on the year. 

Sophomore Tom Shutzman (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) won 6-2, 6-2 over Anh Nguyen at No. 4 singles, while freshman Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot over FBU's Jaxson Ziemann. Shutzman won his third straight match and improved to 6-3 on the year, while Haugen won his seventh straight match and moves to 7-0 on the year.

Meanwhile, in doubles action, Fontbonne picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 for its only two wins in the match. 

Webster's lone doubles win came at the No. 1 spot as Muren teamed with freshman Parker Schaefer (Barnhart, Mo./Windsor) to defeat FBU's No. 1 team of Culton and Stevens, 8-6. Muren and Schaefer are now 2-0 in doubles on the season. 

The Gorloks will put its 10 match win streak on the line this coming Saturday, April 6 as they travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for matches against Transylvania and Rose-Hulman at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. EDT respectively.
