Webster Falls To Chicago In First Round

The Webster University women's soccer team fell in first round NCAA III Regional play, losing to host University of Chicago, 1-0, on November 15.  The Gorloks played their typical hard-nosed defensive game, but couldn't mount an offense against a similarly resilient Maroon defense.

On a blustery, cold, but sunny Chicago day, most of the play was between the boxes in the first half until Chicago struck at the 41:00 mark.

Off a throw in from the sideline to the right of the Webster box, the Maroons worked the ball to the left of the Gorlok goal.  Webster goalkeeper Jessica Davis (SR, Belleville, IL/Belleville West HS) deflected a shot from 10 yards out, but the ball bounced in front of the goal and Chicago's Julia Ozello shot it past a diving Davis for the score.

That would wind up being the only score in the contest as there were only 16 shots total and just two shots on goal in the contest.  Chicago, who came into the game as the #1 seed in the regional, improved to 14-4-1 and will play the winner of the Augsburg College (MN)/University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Webster, coming off a third straight SLIAC Championship, finished at 14-5-3.  The Gorloks went 9-0 the last two seasons in the SLIAC and ended the regular season with a 19-game conference win streak.  Over the past three years, Webster is 25-1 in SLIAC play, 32-1 counting the SLIAC tournaments.

The Gorloks will be losing several key players from those teams that were 49-14-3 over those three seasons, outscoring opponents 223-46, and SLIAC opponents, 136-5.

Five four-year players for the Gorloks were among seven seniors playing their final game in the loss to Chicago:

Davis was the SLIAC Newcomer of the Year in 2011, and SLIAC First Team All-Conference in 2012, 2013, and 2014.  Davis ends her career as the Webster-s all-time leader in wins, shutouts, and games started in goal.  She is second in goals against average and third in saves.  Davis holds the single season record for wins, and is third in saves and goals against average.

Kristin Montgomery (St. Louis, MO/Duchesne HS) was the SLIAC Tournament MVP in 2014 and All-Tournament in 2013.  She was SLIAC All-Conference all four years.  On Webster's career list, Montgomery is sixth in goals and game-winning goals, and seventh in points.  For all-time single season highs, she is sixth in game winning goals and eighth in assists.

Amy Schield (Belleville, IL/Belleville West HS) was SLIAC All-Conference for three years including First Team in 2012 and 2014.  She helped anchor a defense that only allowed five goals over the last three seasons to SLIAC opponents, but scored five goals and had 11 assists as well.

Whitney Scott (Independence, KY/Holy Cross HS) was SLIAC All-Tournament in 2014 and 2012.  On Webster's career list she is third in games started and fifth in games played.  Scott had seven goals and 10 assists from the midfield position as a Gorlok.

Michelle Scally (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain HS) played in 64 games over four seasons for Webster.

Lindsey Adshade (SR, Chicago, IL/DeKalb HS) played two years for the Gorloks and led the SLIAC in assists in 2014 and was SLIAC All-Tournament in 2014 as well.  For Webster's all-time career list, she is fifth in assists per game, and eighth in assists in a single season.

Freddie Brandt (Davis, CA/Davis HS) appeared in 38 games over three seasons for Webster, starting 20.  She had three goals and six assists.

Webster finishes the season ranked ninth in the Central Region by the NSCAA.
