Eureka Alum Mark Scherer Named Interim Athletic Director
EUREKA, Ill. — Eureka College alumnus
Mark Scherer of Eureka has been appointed as interim athletic
director at the college. Scherer will work with former athletic
director Paul Bryant during the transition, said Eureka College
Provost Philip Acree Cavalier.
"Mark Scherer has had
a long, distinguished career as a college coach and athletic
administrator," Cavalier said. "His experience and his deep
knowledge of Eureka College make him the ideal candidate to guide
the EC athletic department during this transition period."
A search committee for the position is being formed, Cavalier
said.
Scherer was named director of capital gifts at Eureka College in
May, a role he will return to after serving as interim athletic
director.
The Roanoke native is a 1983 graduate of Eureka College and is a
member of the college's Athletic Hall of Fame. He played
professional basketball in Europe.
Scherer was head basketball coach at Elmhurst College for 17
years. He holds Elmhurst coaching records for career victories,
career winning percentage of .564 and single-season victories at
22. He was formerly an assistant basketball coach at
Valparaiso
University.
Bryant, who had been athletic director since 2008, will become the
athletic director at Stillman College, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in
September. At Eureka College, Bryant created the Director of
Athletics Honor Roll, oversaw facility improvements at McKinzie
Field and Reagan Physical Education Center and oversaw the launch
of EurekaRedDevils.com. Nine teams qualified for the St.
Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament during his
tenure.
