Six Receive Final Athlete of the Week Honors for Fall 2010

St. Louis, Mo. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the Athletes of the Week for the week of October 25-31.

MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Blackburn College's Chris Walker, a junior from Carlinville, Ill., has been named the Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of October 25-31.

Walker, a forward, scored three goals to help the Beavers to two victories last week. He had one goal in Blackburn's 5-1 victory over Lincoln Christian University. He added two goals, including the game-winner in a 7-0 shutout at MacMurray College.

MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Principia College's John Gotwals, a freshman from Tulsa, Okla. (Bishop Kelley), has been named the Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of October 25-31.

Gotwals, a defender starting at center back, shut down Westminster College's key offensive marksman in what was a critical game for the Panthers. His strong defensive play helped the Panthers shutout Westminster, 2-0, as Principia solidified a spot in the 2010 SLIAC Tournament.

"We count on John's strong play on defense," remarked head coach Vitalis Otieno. "Against DII Maryville University, his strength and physical presence matched the intensity of the Maryville attackers, and he was able to keep the Saints' key goal scorers at bay."

WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Blackburn College's Katie Porter, a junior from Carlinville, Ill., has been named the Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of October 25-31.

Porter, a defender stopper, recorded the game-winning goals in both of Blackburn's victories last week. She had the game-winning goal and one assist in the Beavers 4-2 win over Lincoln Christian University. She added the game-winning goal in a 3-0 victory versus MacMurray College.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Principia College's Carlie Sanderude, a freshman from Ridgefield, Conn., has been named the Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of October 25-31. This marks the second time this season that she has earned the honor and the sixth time that a Principia player has received it.

Sanderude, a defender, was an anchor for the Panthers defense last week. In Principia's 7-1 win over Westminster College (Mo.), Sanderude found herself in the attack numerous times, sending dangerous crosses into the 18 for scoring opportunities. In the backfield, her recovery runs to chase down attackers saved a number of breakaway opportunities, and she also made a goal line clearance while the keeper was out of the net.

"Carlie [Sanderude] was both a lockdown defender and a dangerous attacker at right back," commented head coach Lee Ellis. "In our game against DII Maryville, she was aggressive winning head balls and shutting down any attack that came to her side. It was one of her best defensive performances of the season."

VOLLEYBALL - OFFENSIVE
Greenville College's Corinne Coon, a freshman from Warsaw, Ind., has been named the Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for the week of October 25-31.

Coon, an outside hitter, helped her squad clinch the top seed in the SLIAC Tournament with their win over Webster University. She entered in the third set of the match and had seven kills and only one error on 10 total attempts for a .600 attack percentage, as Greenville defeated the Gorloks 25-19, 25-15, 28-26. Coon added 15 kills, two blocks, two digs and one service ace in three sets played versus Principia College. She also had a career-high 19 kills and tallied four service aces, four digs and five blocks in a five-set victory against Westminster College.

VOLLEYBALL - DEFENSIVE
Westminster College's Alex Berry, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo. (Kirkwood), has been named the Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the week of October 25-31. This marks the second time this season that she has earned the honor.

Berry, an outside hitter, recorded 56 digs and six blocks in three matches played last week. She also added a total of 18 kills, 10 set assists and seven service aces for the week. Berry had 26 digs and two block assists in a five-set loss to Greenville College. She recorded 18 digs, two blocks, four service aces and eight kills in a 25-22, 25-15, 25-12 victory over Principia College. In non-conference action she tallied 12 digs and two block solos in a 3-0 loss to Stephens College.
