Greenville Men Reclaim Cross Country Crown; Principia's Drew Clark Sets Record-Winning Time
Hillsboro, Ill. – The Greenville College men's cross country team won the 2010 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Cross Country Championship by only one point, reclaiming the crown after falling short the past two years. It marks the 12th time that the Panthers have won the Championship, which was held at the Hillsboro Country Club and Park District.
Principia College's Drew Clark claimed the individual crown for the second consecutive year with his course record-winning time of 24:58.17, which is also a Conference Championship record. Clark's time was 31 seconds faster than the No. 2 finisher and grabbed him Runner of the Year honors.
Greenville had four runners finish in the top 10 and posted a total of 36 points to place first. Principia had three runners finish in the top 10 and posted a total of 37 points to place second. The one-point win for Greenville marks only the second time in Conference history that first and second place were separated by one point (Fontbonne defeated Greenville 35-36 in 2008).
Spalding University, Fontbonne University, Westminster College (Mo.), Webster University, Blackburn College and University of Dallas placed third through eighth respectively.
Greenville was led by First Team All-SLIAC recipients Alan Hollingsworth (25:27.15), Cole Prins (25:47.10) and Xavier Ortiz (26:16.73) in second, fourth and seventh place. The Panthers' Bryant Simpson (26:30.44) and Leo Pathy (26:40.08) placed 10th and 13th respectively to earn Second Team All-SLIAC.
In addition to boasting the Runner of the Year, Principia also had the 2010 SLIAC Newcomer of the Year in third place finisher Wylie Mangelsdorf (25:32.07). Clark and Mangelsdorf also earned First Team All-SLIAC honors, as well as teammate Derrick Fleming (25:58.95), who placed fifth overall. Principia's Aean McMullin (26:37.62) was the lone runner for the Panthers to earn Second Team All-SLIAC after finishing in 11th place.
Spalding University's Abram Deng (26:03.55) rounded out the First Team All-SLIAC recipients after placing sixth overall. Teammates Alec Zaremba (26:37.89) and Haile Jemane (26:40.65) placed 12th and 14th overall to earn Second Team All-SLIAC.
Fontbonne University's Mike Horn (26:22.13) and Zach Kassman (26.25.33) were also named Second Team All-SLIAC after finishing in eighth and ninth place respectively.
Also announced during the All-Star Trophy Awards Ceremony following the race was the Greenville College coaching staff as the SLIAC Coach of the Year, while the Panthers also received the Sportsmanship Award.
