Greenville Maintains Title Hold in SLIAC Men's Track and Field
Greenville University maintained its stranglehold on the SLIAC Men's Track and Field title, winning their third straight. In fact, Greenville is the only school to win the men's title since the SLIAC officially began holding a conference championship in 2017. Greenville totaled 267 points this year, edging out the closest competitor by 76 points.
Greenville was strong in the middle distance races with John Mangold winning the 1500-meter race, Dylan Goodyear placing 1st in the 5000 meters, and Dylon Niswonger winning the 10,000-meter race. Goodyear also won gold in the 3000 steeplechase. David Martin pole vault, 110 hurdles SLIAC Track Newcomer of the Year, Rakim Murphy grabbed gold in the long jump with a distance of 22'7" while Erick Garcia won the triple jump. Dominance on the field events continued with Mitchell Hooten, the 2019 SLIAC Field Athlete of the Year. Hooten won gold in the shot put and placed 2nd in the discus, behind teammate Nate Brown; the 2019 SLIAC Field Newcomer of the Year. Chris Crawford won the hammer throw with a mark of 177'10"
Corey Carter shined in the sprint races, capturing gold in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. The Principia runner won the 100 by .01 seconds, winning in 10.69 seconds while his golden time in the 200 was 21.17 seconds. After the meet, Carter was named the 2019 SLIAC Track Athlete of the Year. His teammates E.G. Pierce won the 800-meter race, while Josh Aleman won the 400 hurdles.
Second place team finisher Webster University notched gold in 3 events. Brandyn Robinson took 1st in the 400 with a time of 49.25 seconds. Coale Dolbert made it two straight high jump titles for the Gorloks with a winning height of 5'10". Dimitrije Mitic took 1st in the javelin with a mark of 160'11".
Will Brittain was the top finisher for Spalding, placing 2nd in the 10,000-meter race while Shaun Montgomery finished 5th. Connor Green also picked up points for the Golden Eagles with a 4th place finish in the 400-hurdles while Dane Thomas medaled in the 3000-steeplechase, picking up a bronze.
The lone point tallied for Fontbonne University came from Greigh Murray, placing 6th in the shot put with a distance of 34'2.75".
