Webster Women Wins 1st SLIAC Tennis Title
O'FALLON, Ill. - The Webster University women's tennis team
captured its first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(SLIAC) title, and earned its first trip to the NCAA Tournament by
defeating Greenville College, 5-1, at the St. Clair Tennis
Center.
Alex Meyer (JR, Effingham HS, IL), at the #1
position, Lindsey Hays (FR, Francis Howell HS, STL), at #3,
and Hannah Wojahn (JR, Cannon Falls HS, MN), at #5,
all won in singles. That was enough to secure the
victory for the Gorloks. Webster had entered the singles
competition up 2-1 after the doubles matches. Allison Tungate
and Paige Tungate, both sophomores from Flora HS (IL) won at
#1 doubles, and Meyer and Hays won at #2. Webster had
defeated Principia College (IL), 5-3, in the semi-finals to reach
the champioship match.
It was a long, strange trip for tournament participants as the
site was switched from the Webster Groves Rec Center to Principia's
indoor courts, at the last minute, due to the inclement
weather. The duration of the matches, due to the availability
of only four courts at Principia, dictated the championship matches
be played at the St. Clair Tennis Center in O'Fallon,
Ill. The Gorloks finally prevailed in the women's
championship at 10:45 pm, over 12 1/2 hours after the start of
the first match.
The SLIAC Conference tournament championship was the fourth
for Webster this year, following the women's volleyball, and
men's and women's soccer teams' victories in the fall.
