Principia Women's Tennis Serves Alton Area

Today, the Principia College Women's Tennis team had the opportunity to volunteer their service for the North Alton-Godfrey Business Council beautification day.  The team picked up trash on an eight-block area of State Street in the Upper Alton business district.  Zeke Jabusch, from North Alton-Godfrey Business Council, met us near Joe K's Restaurant and handed out work gloves and trash bags for the team to use.  The team went out in pairs and picked up trash.  Team Captain Caroline Carlson, in the sunglasses, worked with Amber Heady and cleaned up the east side of State Street.  They said they picked up a lot of papers.  Amber said the most interesting trash "were a lot of tags cut off the back of  T-shirts."  Freshman, Kelsie Hussand Hannah Switzer worked the west side of State street and found a lot of receipts and napkins.    International tennis athlete and new to the team this year, Victoire de Visme and coach Carney worked the Northeast side of the street and picked up a lot of straw wrappers and straws.   The Athletes noted that the most common trash from the area were cigarette butts.   Zeke cleaned the Northwest side of the business area.

After our clean-up work, Zeke provided breakfast for us at Joe K's.  We learned a lot about the work of the North Alton-Godfrey Business Council.  Principia College has been a supporting member of the council for over 15 years.  Nick Barron, Assistant Soccer coach and Event Facility manager is Principia's representative on the council.  Next weekend, the council is honoring Mr Godfrey, who helped build the area in 1830, by creating roads and business.  He founded the college on Godfrey  Avenue, currently known as Lewis and Clark.  He was an advocate for women's education and his daughters added the college.  Today work was a great opportunity for the team to give back to our neighboring community.

The team started their non-traditional fall season on September 3rd and will continue to practice through October 12th.  We will play an alumni match next Saturday at 10 AM.   Our only dual match competition this fall will be Lewis and Clark, at home on Thursday, September 26th

Come out and support the alumni match next weekend, Saturday, September 21, it will be in Hexberg Tennis Center on the college campus.
