Gorloks and Hocker Take 2nd Place

Webster University concluded play here Tuesday in the BSN Sports Dataw Invitational by firing a three-round, 54-hole team score of 915 to finish second out of 15 teams at the event held at the Cotton Dike Course at the Dataw Island Club. 
 

The Gorloks, who is ranked 20th in the latest Golfstat Division III team rankings,  closed the 15 team event hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University by firing a final-round score of 308 to finish 31 shots behind McMurry University, who took home the team title with an 884 for 54 holes. Along with shooting a final round score of 308, the Gorloks shot rounds of 304 and 303 in Monday's first and second rounds. 
 
Leading the way for the Gorloks was junior Will Hocker (Grapevine, Texas/University of Oklahoma), who finished the event tied for second place with a 3-over par 219 for 54 holes. Hocker, who shot rounds of 72 and 73 on Monday's first two rounds, cared a final round score of 74. For the event, Hocker was tied for the tournament lead in birdies with 13 and was for second in par-5 scoring as he played the par-72, 6,723-yard Cotton Dike course at 5-under and averaged 4.58 on those holes. 
 
Hocker was tied for second with RPI's Ryan Quinn and McMurry's Elliott Bourke, who also each shot 3-over par 219's for 54 holes. 

McMurry's Brendon Lowrance took home medalist honors as he fired a 1-over par 217 for 54 holes to take home first place honors. Lowrance carded rounds of 71, 74 and 72 respectively. 

In addition to Hocker, senior Cole Pickett (Greenville, Ill./Keiser University)  finished tied for 17th place as he carded a 230 for 54 holes as he shot rounds of 74, 76 and 80. Pickett had nine birdies for the event and was tied for fourth in par-3 scoring as he played the course's par 3 holes at even-par as he averaged 3.00.

The third finisher for the Gorloks was senior Zac Ciesla (Lake Charles, La./Alfred M. Barbe) as he shot a 54 hole total of 232 to finish in a tie for 19th place. Ciesla carded rounds of 83, 72 and 77 respectively and was tied for third in the tournament in pars with 34. 

Webster's fourth finisher was junior Mitchell Vetter (Grapevine, Texas/Colleyville) as he carded a 54 hole score of 237 to finish in 43rd place. Vetter shot rounds of 78, 82 on Monday and then fired a 77 in Tuesday's final round. 

Sophomore Will Lorenz (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) was the final competitor for the team score as he placed in a tie for 52nd place with a 243 for 54 holes. Lorenz shot rounds of 80, 82 and 81 at the event. 

In addition to the five competitors for the team, Webster had three competitors playing as individuals and the Gorloks' top individual was freshman Cody Surma (Lexington, Ill./University High) as he finished tied for 48th place with a 241 for 54 holes. Surma shot rounds of 84, 77 and 80 respectively at the event. 

Junior Christian Deters (Teutopolis, Ill./Teutopolis) was the next highest individual finisher for the Gorloks as Deters shot a 54 total of 248 to finish in a tie for 60th place. Deters carded rounds of 84, 84 and 80 respectively. 

The final individual competitor was sophomore Mike Guthrie (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) as he carded a 274 for 54 holes to finish in 84th place. Guthrie fired rounds of 84, 94 and 96 respectively. 

Webster will continue its spring season on March 30-31 as the Gorloks will travel to Montgomery, Ala., to compete in the WynLakes Invitational held at the WynLakes Country Club.
