Brauer and Kasper Repeat as Top Award Winners
Webster University had repeat winners as top individual award winners for the 2019 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference team. Lilly Brauer and Melissa Kasper repeat as the league's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year while Jen De Leon De Leon and Jeff Wardlaw join them as award winners.
Kasper, a senior forward, was a linchpin in the Gorloks top-scoring attack. The Offensive Player of the Year recorded 7 goals and 10 assists for 24 total points during her nine conference games. Over that span, she ranked 1st in the league in assists and points and 6th in goals while also leading the league with three game-winning goals. Kasper had multiple points in seven conference games including a seven-point effort. Overall this season Kasper finished with 13 goals and 17 assists for 43 points, giving her three straight seasons with double-digit goals and assists. She is the first player to repeat as Offensive Player of the Year since 2014 & 2015 when Spalding University's Dee Dee Sliter won back-to-back.
Her teammate Lilly Brauer also repeats but as the SLIAC Defensive Player of the Year. The senior defender is a fixture on the Gorlok defense. The Gorloks allowed just one goal to a conference opponent this season while limiting conference foes to just 5.4 shots per game. Braurer continues the stretch of Gorlok defenders to take home the league's top defensive award, making it six consecutive seasons a Gorlok has done so.
The 2019 SLIAC Newcomer of the Year goes to Jen De Leon De Leon, from Greenville University. De Leon De Leon, a freshman from Novato, Calif., played in 17 games, starting 16 in her first year with the Panthers. She tallied 4 goals and 4 assists for 12 total points against conference opponents. The midfielder gives the Panther program four of the last five SLIAC Newcomer of the Year award winners.
The final individual award is the Coach of the Year, which goes to Greenville University's Jeff Wardlaw. Wardlaw guided the Panthers to a 10-6-2 overall record and a 7-1-1 SLIAC mark. They earned a share of the SLIAC regular-season title, the first in program history, and a third straight postseason appearance.
The SLIAC places importance on sportsmanship and honors one team for those ideals as voted on by the league coaches. This year's SLIAC Team Sportsmanship award winner is Principia College.
