Greenville Takes Five Set Thriller

Greenville Takes Five Set Thriller

Last night's volleyball match between Greenville University and Webster University lived up to its billing as the SLIAC Game of the Week with Greenville holding off Webster for a 3-2 win. Greenville took the first two sets of the match; 25-22 and 25-19 before Webster stormed back with identical 25-21 scores in the next two sets to draw the match even. Greenville jumped out to the lead in the 5th set but again the Gorloks fought their way back, even taking a late lead, however, the home Panthers rallied for the win.

Webster opened the match with a 5-1 lead but was unable to hold that advantage as they committed 10 hitting errors in the opening set, allowing Greenville to take the early advantage. Greenville kept that momentum going by hitting a match-high .226 in the second set, putting down 17 kills.

Webster again took an early lead in the 3rd set, this time a 4-1 lead, and was able to finish the set out with a win, closing the set with three straight points. The 4th set saw the same, with Webster taking a 4-1 lead early and maintaining control throughout.

The teams traded points early in the 5th set before Greenville built up a 12-5 lead. Down 14-11 the Gorloks fought their way back to even the score thanks to kills from Jordan Price, Jenna Rodriguez, and Kylie Burke. Webster's bid for the come from behind win came up short however when they committed back-to-back errors, giving Greenville a 19-17 win.

Greenville's Anna Finch led all players with 21 kills while Sarah Jacobs paced Webster with 20 kills. The Panthers hit .176 as a team compared to Webster's .169.
