SLIAC Senior Send-Off: Baseball
The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would like to send our best wishes to its 2019-20 senior baseball players. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, all spring seasons were canceled and while the NCAA has announced that seniors will not lose a year of eligibility due to the cancelation, not all will return. With that in mind, we salute the 2019-20 seniors.
The 2020 SLIAC senior baseball class has plenty of hardware to pack up as they leave campuses. Among the honors this year's class has garnered is seven All-American honors, 16 All-Region selections, two SLIAC Players of the Year, two SLIAC Pitcher of the Year awards, one SLIAC Newcomers of the Year, and a Region Rookie of the Year.
The Webster University class includes seniors that helped the Gorloks to three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Headlined by pitcher Matt Mulhearn, who was a three-time All-Region selection and two-time All-American, the Gorloks advanced to the D3 World Series last year with Mulhearn being named the Region Tournament MVP. Mulhearn picked up All-Conference honors twice in his career and leaves as the Gorloks single-season leader in wins, 3rd in career wins, and top 10 in both career strikeouts and career earned-run average. Kyler Kent was a key bat in the Gorlok lineup and has earned All-American honors while being a two-time All-Region and All-Conference selection. He set the Webster single season hits record in 2018. A fixture behind the plate, Joe Swanson leaves as a two-time All-Conference selection. A weapon out of the bullpen for the Gorloks, Shane Donovan was named All-American in 2018 and was also a All-Region performer while earning All-Conference honors. Outfielder A.J. Smith was important to the Gorloks SLIAC title run in 2018, earning All-Tournament team.
Klaiton Wolff was an impact player for Greenville University since arriving four years ago. The utility player was a three-time All-Conference selection; twice earning Second Team honors. He was chosen to the SLIAC All-Tournament team twice in his career and was the Region Rookie of the Year. His teammate Sam Hodges was a two-time All-Conference selection while Sam Alender earned an All-Tournament team nod last spring.
Spalding University's class includes the last two SLIAC Players of the Year; Eric Meyer and Garrett Wilson. Meyer has picked up two All-Region and All-Conference selections in each of the last two years while Wilson leaves with two All-Conference honors, three All-Region nods, and was an All-American in 2018.
Over the past few years, Luke Summers has been one of the top pitchers in the history of the SLIAC. He leaves as a two-time SLIAC Pitcher of the Year while being named All-Region and All-Conference twice and All-American last year. He has a 25-8 overall record in a Griffin uniform and is the program's career leader in strikeouts with 290. Teammate Gus Purschke was a 3rd team All-Conference selection in 2018.
The Westminster class includes a trio of players that earned All-Conference honors during their careers. Ryan Clavin, a former SLIAC Newcomer of the Year, earned All-Conference honors twice and was All-Region in 2018 and 2019. Branden Beeler twice earned All-Conference honors while Will Stonecipher was an All-Conference selection in 2019.
Stephen Strong was named All-Conference as a member of Principia College's team while teammate Will Adler was a All-Sportsmanship selection. Iowa Wesleyan University's Jake Leonard and MacMurray College's Wyatt Logsdon and Brendan Schanz were also All-Sportsmanship recipients.
We wish the best of luck to every student-athlete as they move forward and salute them for their efforts in competition and the classroom over the years!
