McCoy Qualifies as Individual, Gorloks Season Wraps Up

The Webster University golf team was back in action this afternoon when they continued play in the 2023 NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky. After two rounds, the Gorloks finished 24th out of 43 teams after shooting a 36-hole team score of 603 (302-301, +27). Their 24th-place finish did not qualify for the final two rounds of the tournament but Justin McCoy qualified for the final two rounds as one of six individuals.

Justin McCoy was the top competitor for the Gorloks as he finished in a tie for 25th after shooting a two-round score of 145. He shot a 78 (+6) in the first round and bounced back to shoot an impressive 67 (-5) in the second round to finish +1 overall. His round this afternoon included five birdies and an eagle as he shot a 32 (-4) on the front nine and 35 (-1) on the back nine. He has made the cut and will continue play in the tournament tomorrow.

Jan Antonin Wdowka also recorded a top 100 finish as he shot a 75 (+3) in the first round and a 73 (+1) in the second round to finish with a two-round score of 148 (+4). He finished with a team-high seven birdies for the tournament.

Austen Velazquez, Trent Garrett, and Josh Hayes rounded out the competitors for the Gorloks. Velazquez finished in a tie for 120th after shooting a 77 (+5) in the first round and a 76 (+4) in the second round to shoot a 36-hole score of 153 (+9). Garrett finished in a tie for 155th after shooting a 72 (E) in the first round and an 85 (+13) in the second round to shoot a 157 (+13) for the tournament. Hayes finished 214th after shooting an 80 (+8) in the first round and a 93 (+21) in the second round to record a 173 (+29).

This marks the end of the 2022-23 Webster University men's golf season. They finished the year with their sixth straight SLIAC Men's Golf Championship and a 24th-place finish in the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship. They will return to the course in the fall. McCoy is the 6th player in SLIAC history to qualify individually at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship.
