Webster Athletics Hosts Elementary School
Webster University Athletics, as well as the men's and women's basketball teams, welcomed students from Dr. Henry Givens Jr. Elementary School this past Saturday to watch the Gorloks take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins. Students who completed their Webster Reads Challenge by reading their required number of books were invited to the games and a pizza party with the players. The students received goody bags and a Webster Athletics Autograph book when they arrived.
The students enjoyed spending time with the men's basketball student-athletes during the first half of the women's game and the women's team reciprocated during the men's game. Members of both teams helped celebrate the winners with a pizza party and autographs.
Givens Principal, Malissa Beecham, sent the following thank you note to Webster Athletics and Kate Northcott, Director of Webster's Student Literacy Corps, on behalf of the Givens School Community for their day with Webster Athletics:
Good Morning Maureen and Kate,
I wanted to again offer my gratitude on behalf of our School Community. Our time at the Games and the Pizza Party was enjoyed by all. The students and families beamed ear to ear and kept talking about just how much fun they had. Thank you for taking the time to partner with us and provide this opportunity to celebrate student achievement.
This same Reading Challenge occurs in the Summer and we had about 20-25 students participate. By the time all counting was done for the winter, we had about 100 students participate. I heard many stories about how students told their parents, "I just have to read the books!" They were so excited.
Your department and your players were so welcoming and the players played 2 exciting games that brought much excitement and joy to our students and families. Thank you! I look forward to partnering with you for more opportunities in the future.
With much gratitude,
--
