Baseball Trio Earn CoSIDA Academic All-America Honors

Three baseball players from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference have earned College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America honors for the 2020 season. Being recognized by CoSIDA this season are Ryan Clavin, from Westminster College; Matt Mulhearn, from Webster University; and Garrett Wilson, from Spalding University.

Garrett Wilson is making the team for the second consecutive year. He was a first-team selection this spring after earning second-team honors in 2019. Wilson, a double major in business and accounting, becomes the second player in program history to earn multiple CoSIDA Academic All-America honors joining Jimi Keating who earned academic all-America awards in 2017 and 2018. Wilson holds a 3.87 grade-point average and will pursue a master's degree at Spalding University while playing out his final year of eligibility. This marks the fourth consecutive year the Spalding baseball program has had a student-athlete named to the Academic All-America team. Wilson, a Westpoint, Ky. native, was a Google Cloud Academic All-American in 2019, D3baseball.com Preseason All-American in 2019, as well as an ABCA and D3.baseball.com All-American and SLIAC Player of the Year in 2018. The speedy outfielder has a .400 career batting average, with 28 doubles, 14 triples, and 7 home runs, and has amassed 63 stolen bases.

Matt Mulhearn, a senior pitcher at Webster University, was named to the Academic All-America Division III Baseball Second Team. A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District V selection and a three-time member of the SLIAC Spring All-Academic Team, Mulhearn carries a 3.79 cumulative grade point average in his first year of pursuing his MBA at Webster. As an undergraduate student at Webster, Mulhearn earned a Bachelor's degree in Finance and carried a 3.77 cumulative GPA. During his time at Webster, Mulhearn, who is expected to complete his senior campaign in 2021 after having the 2020 season cut short in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has become one of the top pitchers in school history as he is tied for third in career wins (22), fourth in career starts (34), fourth in career innings pitched (246.0), fourth in career strikeouts (227), fifth in career appearances (54) and sixth in career ERA (2.60). As a junior in 2019, Mulhearn won a single-season school record 12 games and posted a 12-2 record and a 2.13 ERA en route to earning Third-Team ABCA/Rawlings and Honorable Mention D3Baseball.com All-American honors, ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region and a First-Team All-SLIAC honoree. Mulhearn is just the fifth Webster student-athlete in school history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors and the second baseball player (Eric Stack in 1991).

Ryan Clavin, an outfielder at Westminster College was chosen as a Third Team selection. Clavin, who is majoring in Business Management and Business Communication, was named the SLIAC Newcomer of the Year, First Team All-Conference, ABCA Division III All-Central Region First Team, and D3Baseball.com All-Central Regional Second Team in 2018. He also was named ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region First Team and Second Team All-Conference in 2019 after hitting 10 home runs and registering a school-record .804 slugging percentage. Clavin finishes his career with the highest slugging percentage in program history (.704), the fourth-most home runs (22), a .357 batting average, 80 RBI, and 99 hits.

Due to CoVID-19, this year's CoSIDA All-Academic teams took career stats into the equation. The Academic All-America Team presented by CoSIDA recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances both athletically and in the classroom. To be nominated by their respective school's SID, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and a starter or key contributor with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Voting for the Academic All-America team is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
