Newsom and Strong Named Academic All-America

Michael Newsom of Spalding Baseball has been named to the Academic All-America, selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC), First Team for NCAA Division III, while Hunter Strong landed on the Third Team.

They are the first Academic All-America honorees for Spalding since 2020 and the eighth and ninth total for the institution. The Golden Eagles are the only St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) team and the only squad in the state of Kentucky to have student-athletes on the DIII baseball Academic All-American team.

Newsom earned the honor with a 4.0 GPA in his Business Communication master's program. He was a member of the SLIAC All-Conference First Team and All-Tournament team. The Cincinnati, Ohio native was also honored with a Second Team selection on the ABCA All-Region 8 team and a D3Baseball All-Region 8 Third Team nod.

Strong got voted in with a 4.0 GPA as he pursues a bachelor's in the Health Science field. The Louisville native was named to the All-SLIAC first team and the MVP of the conference tournament. He also had Second Team honors on both the D3Baseball and ABCA All-Region 8 teams.

Spalding is the only school on the DIII team to have multiple 4.0 GPA honorees this season.

Student-athletes are nominated for the CSC Academic All-America honor by their athletics communications director and must have a minimum 3.50 GPA and be a starter or important reserve on their team. All nominees receive Academic All-District recognition and advance to the national ballot which is voted on by CSC members in that division.
