Carter Headlines SLIAC Track and Field Awards

Principia College's Corey Carter headlines the 2018 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Track and Field awards list; being named the SLIAC Track Athlete and Track Newcomer of the Year. Top Field Athlete of the Year honors went to Matt Hughes while Field Newcomer of the Year went to Austin Wagner. 

Carter, a freshman, received the pair of individual awards after taking home golds in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash events while adding two more bronze medals in relays. Carter won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.64 seconds and followed with a 21.58-second race in the 200-meter. He was a member of the Panthers 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams as well, finishing in 3rd place both events. 

Hughes, from Greenville University, compiled 32 total points at the SLIAC Championship meet. He took 1st place in the javelin with a throw of 158'1". Hughes had a total of five top-three finishes on the weekend. Along with his javelin gold medal, he collected a silver in the high jump and a pair of bronzes in the pole vault and 110-hurdles. He also added another silver in the 4x400 meter relay event. 

Wagner, from Webster University, collected a silver medal in his first championship meet. The freshman set a school record in the triple jump with a mark of 44'8.75", taking 2nd place among competitors. 

Coaches also voted Principia College to receive the 2018 SLIAC Team Sportsmanship Award while the Greenville University coaching staff received the conference's Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
