Tigers Return to Track and Field Competition

The Iowa Wesleyan Tiger Men's and Women's Track & Field teams competed for the first time since 2014 at the Grinnell Invitational this morning. It was an extremely exciting day for the Tigers as records were set and others were broken.

Sierra Howardson (SO/Danville, IA) broke the IW record for the Women's Mile by over 24 seconds. The record Howardson broke was set in 2013 by Breanna Derynck. Derynck's record was set when she ran the mile in 6:23.75. Howardson completed her mile today in 5:59.42. She finished 6th overall in the mile at today's meet. Howardson was also able to finish in 10th for the 800m, running a 2:43.18.

Keona Love (FR/Carbondale, IL) set an IW record for the 60m dash as she completed the race in 8.18 seconds. Love took 5th place overall in the event. Love finished in 7th place in the 200m dash, running a 28.68 in the finals. In the 400m dash, Love took 6th place with a time of 1:06.16. Love was also able to score some points for the Tigers by taking 4th in the long jump, jumping a distance of 4.52 meters or 14 feet 10 inches.

Lida Landre (SR/Loomis, CA) tied for 4th place in the high jump, clearing 1.45 meters or 4 feet 5 inches. Landre took 8th place in the long jump, reaching a distance of 3.59 meters or 11 feet 9.5 inches.

Veronica Morgan (JR/Capron, IL) competed in the shot put for the Women's team. Morgan was able to secure 12th place by throwing the shot put 5.89 meters or 19 feet 4 inches.

On the Men's side, the Tigers had four individuals compete in the 60m dash. Gunner Martin (SO/Alburnett, IA) finished in the lead for the Tigers, but took 12th overall by running the 60 in 7.74 seconds. Trevor Haasis (SR/Williamsburg, IA) finished in 7.88 seconds. Jaheem Hampton (FR/Whigham, GA) ran a 7.95 and Jacquez Hall (SR/Memphis, TN) ran an 8.04.

Martin also ran the 200m dash for IW, finishing 18th overall by crossing the line in 25.37 seconds.

Pedro Palomo (SR/Mundelein, IL) competed in the 400 m dash and was able to take away 18th place overall by finishing in 1:05.84.

Haasis also performed in the high jump and was able to end in 5th place. Haasis completed a height of 1.65 meters or 5 feet 5 inches. He also took 12th overall in the long jump, leaping a distance of 5.29m or 17 feet 4.25 inches.

Hampton came away with 9th place overall in the long jump. He was able to jump a distance of 5.76m or 18 feet 10.75 inches. Hampton also took 3rd overall in the triple jump, going a distance of 12.05m or 39 feet 6.50 inches.

The top Tiger in shot put, Maxwell Paskowitz (FR/Fort Mill, SC), ended in 9th overall. Paskowitz threw 11.81m (38 feet 9 inches). Sebastian Armenta (FR/Rio Rico, AZ) threw 10.78m (35 feet 4.50 inches), Alex Rivera (FR/Athens, AL) threw 9.87m (32ft 4.75in), Kiel Parkhurst (FR/Copperas Cove, TX) threw 9.49m (31ft 1.75in), and Trent Paschal (JR/Canton, GA) threw 9.49m (31ft 1.75in).

The Tiger Women's team took 8th overall with 22.5 points while the Men's team took 8th place with 10 points.

IW will be in action again next Saturday (February 8th) at the Luther Invite at Luther College in Decorah, IA. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:30 am.
