Seven Named D3baseball.com All-Central Region

Seven players from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference have been named 2019 All-Central Region by D3baseball.com. Earning All-Region honors this spring were Quenton Brownlee, Jonathan Hoevelmann, Eric Meyer, Matt Mulhearn, Ben Swords, Luke Summers, and Garrett Wilson.

Luke Summers, from Fontbonne University, was named to the All-Central Region Team for the second straight year after being named to the Second Team in 2018. This year the junior had a standout 2019 campaign. The hurler went 11-2 in 94.0 innings of work, allowing just seven earned runs, striking out 127 batters, and owning a 0.67 ERA, all of which are career-best marks. Nationally, Summers ranks first in ERA and second in strikeouts. Those numbers earned Summers a SLIAC All-Conference First Team selection and awarded him SLIAC Pitcher of the Year honors for the second consecutive season, making him the first player in SLIAC history to accomplish that feat.

His teammate Jonathan Hoevelmann, an infielder, earned the All-Central Region award for the first time in his career. The senior had a career-year at the plate where he batted .377, totaling 60 hits, 41 runs scored, 13 doubles, three homers, and 24 RBI. On the base paths, he was just as effective where he ended up with a single-season record 34 stolen bases and that placed him fifth overall nationally. He was also named to the SLIAC All-Conference First Team. Overall, Hoevelmann closes out his career at Fontbonne with a .320 clip, totaling 145 hits, 105 runs scored, 21 doubles, four triples, five homers, and 60 RBI. He leaves Fontbonne as the all-time leader in stolen bases with 85.

Spalding University had a league-high three representatives on the All-Region team with Quenton Brownlee and Eric Meyer being named First Team selections and Garrett Wilson being named Second Team. Brownlee, a senior outfielder, hit .371 this past spring with 8 home runs while finishing 2nd in the SLIAC with 48 runs batted in. He also led the league with 5 triples and finished 3rd in runs scored and total bases while ranking in the top five in both on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Meyer, a junior shortstop, was the anchor of the Golden Eagles offense; earning SLIAC Player of the Year honors. He hit .380 with 10 home runs and 42 runs batted in; finishing in the top five in all three categories. He set a program record for home runs in a season and also led the league in total bases, runs scored, and hits. Meyer also added 14 doubles and a .645 slugging percentage while stealing 10 bases.

Wilson, a junior outfielder, was selected after hitting .368 this spring and totaling 2 home runs and 29 runs batted in. The leadoff hitter scored 39 runs and finished with 60 hits, including 10 doubles and 4 triples while swiping 18 bases.

The Webster University players named All-Region selections were sophomore third baseman Ben Swords and junior starting pitcher Matt Mulhearn. Both Swords and Mulhearn were named Second-Team All-Central Region selections. Swords, who was named a First-Team All-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection and was also named to the All-Tournament Team at the Whitewater, Wis., Regional, earns his Second-Team All-Central Region selection after hitting .363 heading into the NCAA Super Regional round this weekend.
