There is an old adage that offense wins games but defense wins championships. That phrase held true on Saturday night for Webster University as their defense locked down Spalding University in a 65-51 win in front of the Gorlok faithful.

The game started out in favor of the visiting Golden Eagles as Spalding hit on their first four shots of the game as well as knocking down a pair of free-throws. But it was a Addison Beussink block that ended that Golden Eagle run and moments later Beussink brought the Gorloks within one after a jumper made the score 8-7. Spalding's Megan Goeing grabbed an offensive rebound and followed with a putback with just six seconds left in the opening quarter, giving the Golden Eagles an 18-17 lead after one.

But from that point on the Gorlok defense clamped down, starting with a second-quarter in which they held Spalding to just 2-of-11 shooting. Webster meanwhile climbed their way to a 31-29 halftime lead.

It was more defense in the third quarter for Webster, holding Spalding to just 3-of-10 shooting and forcing seven turnovers in the quarter. Webster guard Jaysea Morgan was the point of the spear for the Gorlok defense, recording three of her game-high six steals in the third quarter alone. Webster carried a 47-39 lead into the fourth and final quarter and resisted any thoughts of losing the lead after putting up 18 points in the fourth, their most points of any quarter in the game.

Webster held Spalding to just 32-percent shooting in the game, allowing no three-point field goals. Morgan led the Gorloks with 15 points while Beussink finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds while earning SLIAC Tournament MVP honors.
