SLIAC Announces First Athletes of the Week for Fall 2011 Season

St. Louis, Mo. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the first Athletes of the Week for the Fall 2011 season.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Spalding University's Abram Deng, a sophomore from Louisville, Ky. (Central), has been named the Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of September 1-5.

Deng finished 3rd out of 75 total runners at the Sodexho Grizzly Cross Country Invitational hosted by Franklin College. In 100 degree heat he ran a time of 27:31.94 on the 8K course, finishing just 48 seconds behind the top runner. Spalding placed fifth out of seven teams competing.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Principia College's Casey Powell, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., has been named the Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of September 1-5.

Powell placed 10th at the Big River Running Early Bird meet hosted by Washington University-St. Louis at Forest Park. She posted a time of 15:21 on the 4K course, and helped the Principia women place 7th overall.

MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
MacMurray College's Karl Tooren, a senior from Hoffman Estates, Ill., has been named the Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 1-5.

Tooren, a forward, led the Highlanders to a season-opening victory versus Lincoln Christian University, 10-0. He scored five goals in the win, while also tallying two assists. MacMurray also lost a hard-fought battle to Knox College, 5-4, over the weekend. Tooren recorded one assist in the loss.

MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Spalding University's Andrew Trombley, a freshman from Elizabethtown, Ky. (Central Hardin), has been named the Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 1-5.

Trombley, a goalkeeper, recorded the victory and shutout in his collegiate debut for the Golden Eagles. Spalding defeated Culver-Stockton 1-0. Trombley tallied four saves in 90 minutes in goal.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Webster University's Morgan Milfeld, a senior from DeSoto, Mo., has been named the Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 1-5.

Milfeld, a wing midfielder, played a total of 74 minutes in 101 degree heat and scored the game-winning goal for the Gorloks in a 4-2 victory against Nebraska Wesleyan University. Milfeld led all players with seven shots, four of which were on goal. She tallied the game-winner at the 38:00 minute mark, and finished her scoring with a goal in the second half.

"Morgan is physically and mentally tough," said Webster head coach, Luigi Scire. "She did not allow the 101 degree temperature affect her outstanding play."

WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Principia College's Murilla King, a sophomore from Novato, Calif., has been named the Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 1-5.

King, a goalkeeper, started the season with two shutouts for the Panthers. She recorded six saves and helped Principia to a double-overtime draw, 0-0, versus NCAA Division II opponent Maryville University (Mo.). King then recorded the victory and shutout as the Panthers defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering, 3-0. She had three saves in 90 minutes in goal.

VOLLEYBALL - OFFENSIVE
Principia College's Tess Rountree, a freshman from Paso Robles, Calif., has been named the Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 1-5.

Rountree, a 6-0 outside hitter, made a stellar collegiate debut as the Panthers went 1-2 on opening weekend. Rountree tallied 20 kills and had only three errors in 46 total attempts for a .370 attack percentage in the first match of the season, a 3-1 loss to the University of Dubuque. She also added five solo blocks and two block assists, along with five digs. She added 11 kills on 41 attempts for a .220 attack percentage in a 3-1 loss to Rockford.

Rountree finished out the weekend with 12 kills and only one error on 26 attempts for a .423 attack percentage as Principia recorded a 3-0 victory versus MacMurray College. She also had two digs, two solo blocks and one block assist in the win.

VOLLEYBALL - DEFENSIVE
Westminster College's Megan Boschert, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo. (Rosati-Kain), has been named the Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 1-5.

Boschert, a libero, was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Colorado College Tournament. In four matches played she recorded a total of 81 digs. Boschert's best performance of the tournament was 31 kills in a 3-1 loss to Howard Payne University (22-25, 27-25, 16-25, 29-31). She also had 15, 18 and 17 digs respectively against SUNY-New Paltz, Gustavus Adolphus and Colorado College.
