Burroughs and Holtz Tabbed All-Region

2021 NFCA DIVISION III ALL-MIDWEST REGION

Webster University fifth-year senior centerfielder Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad) and freshman shortstop Sidney Holtz (Taylorsville, Utah/Murray) were named to the NFCA All-Midwest Softball Team on Friday afternoon.

Burroughs, who named the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Year last Friday, was named a First-Team All-Region selection, while Holtz, who was a Second-Team All-SLIAC selection, was a Third-Team All-Region selection.

With their selections, Burroughs and Holtz become the first Gorloks to earn NFCA All-Region honors since Chelsea Schaffer was named a Third-Team All-Region honoree as an At-Large selection in 2011. In addition, it marks the first time since 2008 that the Gorloks have had multiple All-Region selections in the same season since having three overall selections in 2008.

Burroughs earns her First-Team NFCA All-Midwest Region selection after leading the Gorloks in batting average (.448), hits (43), runs scored (25), at-bats (96), doubles (9), home runs (6), RBI (32), slugging percentage (.771), on-base percentage (.485) heading into the NCAA Division III Regionals next weekend. In addition, she has drawn seven walks, is 4-for-4 on steals and has struck out just nine times in 96 at-bats. She ranks in the Top 10 in the league in hits, runs scored, doubles, home runs, RBI, batting average, on-base percentage and batting average. On the year, Burroughs has a team-best 14 multi-hit games, including a Webster season high five hits earlier this season at Spalding and also has had 10 multiple RBI games.

Holtz earns her Third-Team NFCA All-Midwest Region selection at shortstop after being second on the team in batting average at .396 and has had 36 hits, scored 20 runs, hit eight doubles and 11 RBI in 30 games. In addition, she has drawn five walks, leads the team with six sacrifice hits and struck out just six times in 91 at-bats and has recorded a .484 slugging percentage and a .429 on-base percentage and has had 11 multi-hit games and three multiple RBI games.

Burroughs and Holtz helped lead Webster to a 20-10 overall record and runner-up finish in the SLIAC regular season standings with a 6-4 mark. The Gorloks, though, went undefeated last weekend at the SLIAC Tournament to claim the program's first tournament title since 2009 and helped the Gorloks earn the league's automatic bid to NCAA Division III Regional Tournament. The NCAA will unveil the 48-team NCAA Division III Tournament field on Monday, May 17.
