Panthers Fall To Hope

Panthers Fall To Hope

The Greenville University softball team dropped their first round game of the 2018 NCAA Division III Softball Championship to Hope College 8-0. Next up for the Panthers are Franklin College at 10 a.m. on Friday morning.

Facing the host school, Hope, Greenville fell behind early when they allowed a run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly. Hope broke the game open in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a costly error that should have ended the inning. That gave Hope the opening they would need as they followed with five straight hits including a two-run home that would make the score 7-0. Hope added a run in the bottom of the sixth to end the game in six innings.

The Greenville offense was unable to get anything going all game long despite putting the game's leadoff hitter, Jordyn Wieland, on base with an error. She was quickly erased as part of a strick out, throw-out double-play. Becca Oldham followed with a walk but was stranded at the end of the inning. The Panthers drew two more walks in the games final five innings with their only hit coming in the third inning on a single by Josie Koontz.

Maegan Stone took the loss for Greenville, going 4 innings and allowing 7 runs, 1 earned, while striking out five.
