SLIAC Announces Basketball Players of the Week for January 3-9

St. Louis, Mo. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the men's and women's basketball athletes of the week for the week of January 3-9.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Spalding University's Dewhon McAfee, a junior from Louisville, Ky. (Butler), has been named the SLIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of January 3-9.

McAfee, a 6-0 guard, averaged 23.7 points in three games played last week. He also averaged 5.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals as the Golden Eagles went 3-0 in conference play.

McAfee's best performance of the week was 35 points, eight rebounds, five steals and five assists in an 87-76 victory versus MacMurray College. He shot 12-of-19 (.631) from the field, 4-of-6 (.666) from three point range and 7-of-8 (.875) from the charity stripe. McAfee had 22 points and seven rebounds in a 65-56 win over Blackburn College, and he also added 14 points, four assists and two steals in a 90-76 win versus Greenville College.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Westminster College's Rachel Backes, a junior from Tipton, Mo., has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of January 3-9.

Backes, a 5-4 point guard, averaged 14.0 points, 6.3 assists and 3.0 steals in three Blue Jay wins last week. She had 19 points on 7-of-11 (.636) shooting from the field, 2-of-2 (1.000) from behind the arc and 3-of-3 (1.000) from the free throw line in an 83-65 win versus MacMurray College. She also added four assists, two rebounds and two steals in the win.

Backes was one assist shy of a double-double in Westminster's 77-58 victory against Blackburn College. She finished with 12 points, nine assists, five rebounds and three steals. Backes ended the week with 11 points, six assists and four steals as the Blue Jays edged Eureka College 79-72.
