Webster Sweeps First SLIAC Hitters of the Week in 2013

St. Louis, Mo. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the Athletes of the Week for the week of February 25-March 3.

BASEBALL - HITTER
Webster University's Brett Buchanan, a junior from Villa Park, Ill. (Willowbrook), has been named the Diamond Sports Baseball Hitter of the Week for the week of February 25-March 3.

Buchanan, a right-handed batter, blasted the Gorloks' first home run of the season in a 10-3 loss to North Central College. He powered a pitch on the outside of the plate onto the right field porch of GCS Ballpark. Buchanan finished 1-for-2 with one run scored and an RBI. He is now batting .333 on the season.

SOFTBALL - HITTER
Webster University's Aly Watson, a senior from St. Peters, Mo. (Fort Zumwalt South), has been named the Softball Hitter of the Week for the week of February 25-March 3.

Watson, a catcher, hit .500 for the week as Webster went 1-3 on their trip to Jackson, Miss. She was 2-for-4 in a 5-3 loss to host Millsaps College. She then went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base in the Gorloks 13-2 win over Centenary College (La.). Watson ended the week by going 2-for-3 in an 11-4 loss to Millsaps, hitting a double and scoring one run.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Principia College's Olivia Ikuma, a freshman from Holliston, Mass. (Principia Upper School), has been named the Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of February 25-March 3.

Ikuma played aggressively last weekend at the Principia Invitational Flight Tournament winning five of her six matches. She posted three victories at #5 singles against NCAA Division II and NAIA opponents; she defeated Missouri Baptist University's Shelby Mund, 6-1, 6-1, Truman State University's Lauren Higgins, 6-3, 6-1, and McKendree University's Erika Smith Thomas, 6-2, 6-1. Ikuma went 2-1 at #3 doubles with teammate Justine Roy. Their lone loss was an 8-4 decision versus Truman State. They recorded 8-1 and 8-0 wins against Missouri Baptist and McKendree respectively.
