Magnussen Sets Program Record

Magnussen Sets Program Record

Senior Volleyball captain Lucy Magnussen of Hampshire, Illinois, just became the all-time kills leader in the history of Blackburn College volleyball. She broke the record with her fourth kill in the second set versus Fontbonne. Magnussen needed four kills heading into tonight's match on September 28th, 2021 to break former teammate Kaitlyn Wiegand's record of 638 kills. Magnussen also ranks fifth in Blackburn's history for blocks. If she continues on pace, she will have a chance to finish second in the college's history.

Magnussen has contributed to Beaver's Volleyball for the entire 4 years of her career at Blackburn College. During her freshman season, she played in 25 matches and 78 sets. She averaged 1.77 kills per set, placing her at third best. Magnussen had 138 kills which were fourth-best during her freshman season. She tallied up 46 total blocks and ranked third for the Beavers that season. Still, in her freshman season, Magnussen had a game with eight blocks, a career-high, and ten kills in a win over Lincoln Christain.

Magnussen had an impressive jump in year two as she was credited with 254 kills. Her 254 kills are fifth-best in a single season in Blackburn history. She averaged 2.65 kills per set (a team-best) and had 53 total blocks, second-best that season. She played in 96 sets her sophomore season. In a win over Principia, she was credited with a career-high of 26 kills.

For her junior year, Covid season did not slow Magnussen down, as she was second in kills and total blocks throughout the season. She ranked third in the conference with a .285 hitting percentage. Because it was a shortened season, she won a career-low of 52 sets.

Leading into tonight's game (September 28th), Magnussen has been playing amazing as she is on pace for a career year. She is tied for third in the conference with 134 kills and is averaging 0.95 blocks per set which rank fourth in the conference. This Middle Hitter is leading Blackburn with 134 kills, 2.39 kills per set, and 53 total blocks in the early season.

"Lucy has led us each game as our go-to hitter. Her high volleyball IQ allows her to slow the game down and read our opponents well, " coach Hauser stated when asked about Magnussen's play on the court this season.

Coach Hauser expresses that, " Lucy has been a key pillar in the foundation or rebuilding our program."

Magnussen will look to continue her impressive campaign as the Beavers are just starting conference play.
