Spalding's Harrod Named Player of the Year; SLIAC Women's Basketball Award Winners Announced
ST. LOUIS - Spalding University's Kelly Harrod was named the 2012-13 SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year. The other SLIAC award winners were also announced, including Fontbonne University's Samantha Voegtle as Newcomer of the Year and Westminster College's Tracey Braden as Coach of the Year.
Harrod, a senior forward, is the first women's basketball player from Spalding to earn SLIAC Player of the Year honors. She is one of two players this season to average a double-double in conference play, recording 10 double-doubles in 15 conference games played. Harrod finished second in the SLIAC in scoring, averaging 17.2 points per game and third in rebounding with 10.4 rebounds per game. In addition, she became the Golden Eagles' all-time leading scorer earlier this season.
Voegtle, a freshman forward, was named the SLIAC Newcomer of the Year. She led all first-year players in scoring with 13.2 points per game, which also ranked ninth overall. Voegtle was second among newcomers in rebounding (7.6 rpg) and blocked shots (20) and ranked eighth and fifth respectively in the same categories overall.
Braden led the Blue Jays to their third straight SLIAC regular season title after finishing 14-2 in conference play this season. This marks the third time in five years that she has earned Coach of the Year honors, having won the award in 2008-09 and 2010-11 as well.
Greenville College, Principia College and Westminster College all shared the SLIAC Sportsmanship Award this season. It marks the fifth time that Greenville has received the award, having earned it in its first three years (2005-08) and again in 2010-11. Principia received the Sportsmanship Award back-to-back in 2008-09 and 2009-10, while this is Westminster's second consecutive year to receive the honor. The team Sportsmanship Award is given to the team whose players, coaches and fans best exhibit the principles of good sportsmanship. The SLIAC also recognizes one individual from each team, selected by her coach and teammates, who throughout the season best displays the ideals of sportsmanship. The 2012-13 All-Sportsmanship Team includes Kylie Sparks (Blackburn), Victoria White (Eureka), Hillary Johnson (Fontbonne), Laura Hobbie (Greenville), Rachel Yeast (MacMurray), Sarah Corbitt (Principia), Lindsey Roarx (Spalding), Alyssa Sapp (Webster) and Laci Luff (Westminster).
