Eureka Women's Basketball Exceeds 800 Community Service Hours

EUREKA, Ill. – While the win total increased and the awards piled up on the court for the Eureka College women's basketball team during the 2011-12 season, the Red Devils have also had the opportunity to contribute off the court. Eureka women's basketball student-athletes have compiled more than 800 combined hours of community service in the past year, running their two-year total under head coach Taren Martin to nearly 1,500 hours.

The women's basketball student-athletes have donated their time and efforts to nearly a dozen different events in Eureka and surrounding communities over the course of the previous year. For the third consecutive year, the Red Devils contributed as volunteers at the community's annual Reagan Festival, Maple Lawn Homes and the Angel Tree Party for area youths hosted by Eureka College. Many of the student-athletes participated as counselors at each of the youth basketball camps hosted at the Reagan Center and have joined area youths during recess at local elementary schools.

Additionally, the Eureka women's basketball student-athletes have regularly bagged groceries at Shop and Save grocery store and worked in the concession area at Peoria Chiefs Stadium throughout the 2012 season. The Red Devils also began "Raking Leaves with EC", where women's basketball student-athletes raked leaves for residents throughout the community.

Eureka is coming off a 21-5 record last season, the fourth 20-win season in the 37-year history of Eureka College women's basketball. Additionally, Eureka's 12-win improvement (nine to 21) overall proved to be the most dramatic turnaround in program history. Martin, who guided the Red Devils to an appearance in the St. Louis Intercollegaite Athletic Conference Tournament championship game, was selected as the 2012 SLIAC Coach of the Year, while second-year guard Caty Eeten (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) was the 2012 SLIAC Player of the Year.

The Red Devils are scheduled to open the season on 2012-13 season on Thursday, Nov. 15 at Knox at 6 p.m.. The 2012-13 home opener follows on Saturday, Nov. 24 against Concordia (Ill.) at 1 p.m. Eureka is scheduled to play 25 regular season games during the upcoming season, including a two-game trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico in December.
