SLIAC Game of the Week: Westminster at Spalding

This week's SLIAC Game of the Week is a women's soccer contest between Westminster College and Spalding University. The two teams will meet on Saturday in Louisville, Ky. for their conference-opening contest. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at Champions Trace Field.

Spalding University 'GOLDEN EAGLES'

Spalding will enter the game with a 3-2-1 overall record and will be coming off a 4-1 loss to Hanover. The Golden Eagles average just under 12 shots a game but lead the conference in shots on goal percentage with a .643 mark. 

Kelsie Huffman has a team high eight points, all coming off her team best four goals. Huffman has netted her four goals on just 17 shots. Ali Bumblis is the only other Golden Eagle with double digit shots this season (15). Six other Spalding players have netted a goal this year. Spalding is young in the net with freshman Kayla Strehle and sophomore Ashlee Wilson seeing action. Strehle leads the team with over 440-minutes and 21 saves while Wilson holds an 82-percent save percentage.

        

Westminster College 'BLUE JAYS'

Westminster starts the week with a 3-2-1 overall record. They will play their final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday when they host Millikin. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Wendy Sanchez the Blue Jays are making the most of their scoring chances. The Blue Jays average 11.7 shots per game but rank first in the league with a .214 shot percentage. 

Natalie Schulte leads the team with five goals and 12 points. Gracie Koonce is second with four goals, all coming in a win over Stephens last week. Cara Wilfong has recorded two goals and three assists this season. Defending SLIAC Defensive Player of the Week Sarah Cradick has played all 560 minutes in net and holds a 0.48 goals-against average with a 91-percent save percentage. 

 

Last Meeting
Westminster blanked Spalding 2-0 in their last meeting, on October 14, 2017. The Blue Jays scored two first-half goals en route to the win with Morgan Henry and Madison Ekern finding the back of the net. Westminster outshot Spalding 15-7 in the game including 13-2 in the first 45. Sarah Cradick recorded the shutout for the Blue Jays, stopping three shots. 

Game Notes

  • Westminster leads the all-time series against Spalding 6-4 with the two teams trading wins in each of the last six meetings.
  • Saturday's game will be Spalding's first contest in 10 days. 
  • Westminster is undefeated in their last three games, going 2-0-1 since September 9th. 
  • Spalding keeper Kayla Strehle currently ranks third in the league in goals against (6) and fifth in goals-against average (1.22). 
  • Gracie Koonce tied a Westminster program record with her four goal outburst against Stephens last week.
