First World Series a Win a Thriller for Webster; Gorloks Advance

Appleton, Wis. - The Webster University baseball team won it first NCAA III World Series game in a thriller, beating Kean University (NJ), 8-7, on May 26 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis.  Taylor Stoulp had a two-out, two-strike single in the bottom of the ninth to drive in two runs and give the Gorloks a walk-off win.

Webster loaded the bases in the ninth on an infield single by C Matt Moore (SR, Air Academy, CO), a single up the middle by Michael Aaron (SO, Edwards County HS, IL), and a walk to OF Cody Stevenson (JR, Centralia HS, IL).  After fouling off a two-strike pitch, Stoulp laced a hit inside the first base bag into the right-field corner to score pinch-runner Devon Johnson (FR, Timberland HS, MO) and Aaron to win the game.

The Gorloks battled throughout the contest, building up a three-run lead in the seventh after scoring in the fourth, fifth, and seventh.. 

After a four-run eighth by the Cougars, Webster had to come back again to tie the game.  A Stoulp single scored OF Cody Stevenson (JR, Centralia HS, IL,) to tie the game, 6-6,  .  Kean wasn't going down easy, and scored a run on three straight singles in the top of the ninth, to take one last lead, 7-6, before Stoulp's heroics in the bottom half of the inning.  

Stoulp, a sophomore shortstop from St. Mary's High School (MO) continued a scorching post-season attack with a four for six game, with three RBIs and a run scored.  He is six for 10 in the Series, with four RBIs, and 16-28 with 12 RBIs in the NCAA post-season.  In the process, Stoulp extended his hitting streak to 20 games, and has a hit in 35 of his last 36 games.

Kevin Kojs (SO, Lincoln Way Central HS, IL) had his second straight big day at the plate, going four for four, with two RBIs.  Kojs, the Gorloks second baseman, single with two outs in the sixth inning drove in two and gave Webster its first lead of the Series.  Kojs was three for four in the opener, with an RBI, making seven for eight in the Series.

Third baseman Mitchell Bonds (JR, Kankakee CC, IL) put the Gorloks on the board with a solo home run in the fourth inning.  Right fielder Alex Kazmierski (JR, Triton CC, IL) was three for four, with a run scored, and an RBI.  First baseman Tom Henke (SR, Lindbergh HS) was two for three, with a run scored and two walks in the game.

Steven Dooley (JR, Florissant Valley CC, MO) won his seventh game in relief of starter Isaac Behme (FR, Harrisburg HS, IL).  Dooley allowed seven hits and five runs, four earned, in three and two-thirds innings.

A wild pitch on a strikeout, with two out in the Cougars four-run eighth, cost Dooley four of the runs.  Behme went five and a third innings, giving up six hits and two runs.

The Gorloks are 36-13 on the season.  The 36 wins are a new high in a season for Webster baseball  Webster will play at 3:30 p.m. on May 27 vs. the loser of the University of St. Thomas/Marietta College contest. The game will once again be video streamed live at ncaa.com.
