Sprague Honored With Distinguished Service Award

The 2020 recipient of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Lee McKinney Distinguished Service Award is Mary Ann Sprague. Sprague completed her 21st season as the Panther volleyball head coach. In that time she helped turn around the program on the court while also making a lasting impression off the court.

Long-time assistant coach Heather Fairbanks said, "I can't think of anyone that is more deserving of this award than Mary Ann. I have known her for over 20 years and I am constantly inspired by her work ethic, passionate leadership, and the unwavering support she gives anyone in need. She has been my role model, my mentor, my friend, and I consider her family. I know that she has impacted hundreds of student-athletes over the years as well as fellow coaches, administrators, and the conference as a whole."

"When I think of Principia Volleyball, I immediately think of Mary Ann Sprague," said Webster University head coach Merry Graf. "Her love of the sport and passion to share her knowledge with all is clearly evident. One of Mary Ann's special gifts as a coach is to get the absolute most from her players. Her attitude, drive, and character have stood out over her career. Our teams have had some epic battles over the years and win or lose I've always walked away with the utmost respect for Mary Ann, her program and her players."

Sprague totaled a school-record 331 wins as volleyball head coach, leading the Panthers to 11 SLIAC Tournament appearances, and was named the SLIAC Coach of the Year five times. Her team received the SLIAC Volleyball Team Sportsmanship award seven times and Spraque was instrumental in the addition of beach volleyball as a sport for Principia. Last year Sprague led the Panthers to the Dominican Republic for a service trip and has often served as a pillar for new coaches while promoting the sport of volleyball through her numerous camps. Sprague also represented Principia College as its Senior Women Administrator and member of the SLIAC Administrative Council while serving on the NCAA Division III Volleyball regional ranking committee and is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) and National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).

"Mary Ann has been a credit to our institution and we are truly grateful for her dedication to the profession," said Principia College Athletic Director Ann Pierson. "She has been an important mentor to our students, who were fortunate to have her as their coach, as well as to many young coaches; all of whom benefited from her energy, passion, and vision."

The Lee McKinney SLIAC Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to the individual that has served or competed in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and best exemplifies the qualities of leadership, dedication, service, and perseverance displayed by longtime Fontbonne University director of athletics, Lee McKinney.
