SLIAC Game of the Week: Greenville at Eureka

 

At a Glance

The first SLIAC Game of the Week for the 2017-18 basketball season features what will be a high scoring affair between Greenville University and Eureka College. Greenville is averaging 121.6 points per game this year, third most in all of NCAA Division III, while Eureka College is averaging 99.6 points per game and led by the league's leading scorer Shea Feehan (33.4 points per game). The two teams will tip on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. at the Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena on the campus of Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois.

Eureka College 'RED DEVILS'

Eureka is off to a fast start this season with a 4-1 overall record, having won three straight games. The Red Devils have topped 100 points three times already this season and just missed a fourth game with 97 points.

Feehan, a junior guard, is averaging 33.4 points per game and coming off a 49 point outburst, setting a new program record for single-game scoring. He is shooting 49.5 percent from the field including 40-percent from three-point range while averaging 8.6 free-throws made per game. Hank Thomas provides a second option, 17.8 points per game while knocking down 44-percent of his three's. Ryan McElmurry is averaging a conference-best 26 assists this season.

        

Greenville University 'PANTHERS'

Greenville starts the week with a 2-3 record and is coming off a 142-128 loss to Buena Vista on Saturday. The Panthers trailed 82-58 at halftime before turning it on in the second-half thanks to Johari Dix's 42 points. 

Dix, the lone returning starter for the Panthers, is averaging 19.4 points, 4.0 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. Dix, who scored in double figures just nine times last year including a career high of 18 points, has reached that mark four times already this year including two games topping his previous career high. Rakim Murphy (4.0 three's per game) and Swade Edwards (3.2 three's per game) have stepped right into the system and are not afraid to let it fly. 

 

Looking At Last Year
Greenville swept the season series last year against Eureka, marking the first sweep in the series since the 2013-14 season. The Panthers won the series by a combined six points last year, winning the first game 145-142 in overtime and then 149-146 one month later. Greenville knocked down 37 three's in the two games. Eureka was led by Hank Thomas' 44 points in game one and 42 points in game two. 

Game Notes

  • Greenville leads the all-time series against Eureka 12-10 and swept last year's two-game series. 
  • Eureka and Greenville combined for 295 points in their last meeting, setting a new conference record for combined points scored in a game.
  • Shea Feehan is second in NCAA Division III in scoring average.
  • Despite a nearly entire new lineup, the system remains for Greenville. In fact, the Panthers are averaging more three's made per game (18.4) than last year.
  • Eureka leads the conference in three-point shooting (38.3), free-throw shooting (81.5) and is second in field goal percentage (48.3).
